Just a short excerpt from my story 'Heterodyne'. The full version comes in at around 4k words, and will appear in the forthcoming anthology Werewolves Versus Everything. The whole big cathartic mess - 20 entries comprising stories, poems and art - will be available on a pay-what-you-want basis (from $1) in August or September this year. From what I've seen of the entries so far it's going to be amazing.

Thank you! I've been wanting to write this story for a while. Music is a really important part of my life, and not just because I make a bit of pocket-money from it.
"Howls 'biologist'" – yeah, I'm afraid I just couldn't help myself ;) My background does seem to creep into quite a lot of what I write. One of my references for this story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_.....Brain_on_Music
It's a damn good book.
Best of all? I didn't need to make up the stuff about heterodynes and combination tones at all, because they are very much a 'thing'.

Interesting. I wish I had the time to read more nonfiction books. Even a little bit of research is one of the best things one can do to improve their writing, in my limited experience. Music and audiobooks are in a constant battle for airtime during my commute though, so might be worth carving out some time for a read.
One of the hardest lessons I learned was that you only ever use about 5% of the 'world' you've created for a story – but it's absolutely essential that you did the research and the imagining for the other 95% as well. I think the trick is to admit to yourself that the time spent on that unused 95% wasn't wasted; it was time legitimately spent, because it allows you to pick the 5% that makes your story really sing.
(Plus, y'know, parts of that 95% have a way of being regurgitated in other stories.)

Ha, true. You never know when something you wrote five years ago in your worldbuilding notes is going to show up and inspire a spinoff. Oh to explore the internal "wikis" of some of the world's best worldbuilders and explore their 95%. I'd love to get ahold of some Silmarillion-like compilations from a few authors.
The Silmarillion... I admit, I've never managed to complete the whole thing, as much as I admire the endeavour. I believe Tolkien started world-building for Middle Earth while in the trenches in World War 1, and was still at it when he died decades later. Incredible.
Anyway, I thought you might like this: https://www.housepetscomic.com/comi.....o-me-probably/

Silmarillion gave me a better appreciation for the books and movies, but I can't say I enjoyed the read. Haha. Amazon's new Rings of Power series has been an absolute trip to watch having read it, too. It's fun knowing what details the show derived its questionable decisions from.
That comic reminds me of when I regale my boyfriend with the lore behind my big project. His eyes glaze over like donuts, and I don't blame him. Oh how I appreciate him letting me ramble though.

It's on my list of things to read, although I've certainly got a lot to catch up on!
Lackadaisy is also on my list. I also have a kickstarted copy of Oren's Forge I gotta get to. Gosh, there's just so much to read, but I'm loving it. I finished up Skeleton Crew by Gre7g recently and now I'm reading through Heretic by Rukis, which is great so far.
