Calbin was bioengineered from a regular Dragon that Humans found and was given more intellect and increased strength and durability. What the Humans didn't think would happen was the fact that instead of becoming smarter, the brain split apart into different personalities, creating more heads to form on the body and making the body grow bigger from the side effects of the strength they wanted to give him. Not knowing where they are or what happened, they escape and question what their life is and due to their sizes the rational thing they all think of is to hide themselves away thinking they are "a monster" an "experiment gone wrong" scenario. This form of isolation caused him to get defensive around others, even his own species. Now, he just lives his life questioning what to do everyday with each of the heads having a different outlook on the world they were brought into.
