This version was originally performed by Alexandra Burke. It was sang by her with a time limit, so there are cut verses, however I think it gets the point of the song across just as well.
The vocal melody was not in any way based on her vocals, I hadn't actually ever heard her rendition of the song until after recording.
Update: Yes, I know Leonard Cohen was the original writer of this song. This backing track was used by Alexandra Burke.

I think I had this exact same conversation with someone this weekend. But then again know one knows who Leonard Cohen is. I can't say that I am surprised though. Even I am not really a fan of his singing and recording style. It's kinda like the case of burt Bacharrack where you have a brilliant song writer that simply has no idea how to present his own material. Case and point his and the carpenters version of "Close to you." I actually find Burt's version absolutely sickeningly cliche but the one the carpenters did was beautiful.
This is also quite beautiful. Your lovely voice is able to win hearts and change opinions about songs.

This is a good song, it was originally written by Leonard Cohan, but I hate the way he sings it. The version I really like more than any other is the one Rufus Wainwright did for the movie Shrek. He holds his notes out and brings it down low. And he'd get aggresive for a moment at the lyric "She broke your throne, and cut your hair..." and then brought it right back low and nice. And just the way he'd sing that "Hallelujah," holding it out, going up and then way down, gets me feelin', lol. You have an awesome voice, and you should check out his version, love to hear this song sang like that ^-^
I love Rufus' version as well, it's probably my favorite. But I didn't want to just do what he does, since that's the one everybody knows. I chose this track because it omitted a few verses, which makes it unique on it's own, and then I sang it how I wanted to. I didn't want it to sound too much like anybody else's track.
Yeah, this is theo nly leonard Cohen song people actually care aobut, and as a Cohen fan it bothers meThe faith, Suzanne, coming back to you, famous blue raincoat, who by fire, alexandra leaving, dance me to the end of love
, Cohen has done a lot of nice song, and this is jsut scratching the surface....
Anyway, it is a nice song, its actually one of my least favorite Leonard Cohen songs, since I think it sounds a little uninspired, but you made it work really well. Its interesting that they chose to include that son in Shrek, they had a lot of interesting music in shrek, I like the soundtrack since a lot of my favorite bands are featured on it.

I enjoyed this a lot. You really did a great job with this song. I really enjoyed your rich sounding voice for this song. You always but so much feeling into your songs and we, the listeners, pick that up. That makes all your songs so enjoyable.
You did a great job with this song.
Keep up the good work.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Jeff Buckley's version yet. Apart from Shadowwolfen's version, Jeff's has to be the best ever. You did a really nice version though. It's nothing against YOU, i'm just not a fan of Alexandra Burke's version, I feel the X Factor musicians butchered what was once an emotionally beautiful song. Your vocals are great though
