Coming from a humble family life in Japan with his parents, Rioku held admiration for strength. He asspired to be someone strong like his father, who worked as a martial arts instructor to teach the weak how to defend themselves. But he never neglected his mother's mental strength, able to keep calm under pressure as an exorcist who worked amongst the spirits and demons. While his father would teach him how to defend himself, his mother gave him the knowledge of yakoi, whther or not her stories were even true, no one knows.
Although they managed, Rio's parents found it hard to earn a suitable wage that would allow them to retire any time soon if at all, so they decided to relocate to America, New York City. Rioku's culture shock at the entirely different lifestyle and values would challenge their resolve. Learning a new language, being surrounded by new facilities and businesses, but mostly, no longer being near his mother's favorite shrine. They used to visit constantly to send prayers to the legend Nekomata, a cat like yokai who was known to guard those who worshipped it from foul spirits. Most likely another one of his mother's folktales.
Growing up in NYC was a bit rough for Rioku, who lacked the charm to blend into crowds as a foreigner. The older he got, the more opportunities he had to use the martial arts his dad taught him as he found himself in fights where he had to defend himself. During high school, he began wrestling on the team and found out that he had sharp perceptive skills and good memory for moves. Prior, he'd always assumed his father was just a really good teacher.
When he became 18 and graduated high school, he and his parents visited Tokyo where they were originally from, but were disappointed to see so many things changed, including the now rustic and unattended shrine his mother used to visit. It was defaced with graffiti, littered with trash, and worst of all, the stone statue that rested on it's pillar of the Nekomata was now broken on the ground. Rio's rage got the best of him, and he swore that if people didnt believe the the demon before, they would once he found a means to let off his steam.
Coming back to America, he used his time to pick up boxing, fighting to let off steam. He would get into street fights fairly often in his adult years until his mother helped him find his center through meditation. He learned to keep his emotions in check for the most part and a few years later, he began wrestling in amateur leagues as a safer form to relieve stress until he was signed to Leviathan. He earns to make a name for himself in order to both earn respect for the Nekomata yokai, and earn cash to get the shrine back home repaired.
