I recently re-watched and then re-read The Hobbit. It rekindled my absolute distain for the movie version of Orcrist (Thorin's Sword). So I spent some time re-designing Orcrist. Unfortunately, because the only description of the Glamdring and Orcrist in the book is "beautiful scabbards with jewelled hilts" I wound up designing 6 different swords. The first is a migration era sword, since Orcrist is supposed to be an ancient sword forged in Gondolin and Tolkien took much of The Hobbit from the Poetic Edda's that this design would be a good start. The second is a type XIV arming sword, my thoughts being what kind of medieval knightly sword could it be? The third is a type XIIa longsword, here my though was on if the sword was similar to Glamdring, the pommel is a nod to Orcrist's depiction in the Rankin / Bass Hobbit. The fourth I started thinking, well what if it was a single edged sword? I used the same hilt as the arming sword and put a 1a Falchion blade on as I quite like the look of those falchions, while a wide sword, the blade is very thin. Keeping with this idea the fifth is a langmesser type 3c. The sixth is a krigsmesser, again though being if it's a two-handed single edged sword how would that look? Anyway, wanted to share and hope y'all like.
