Daiku Maryuu Gaiking and the support team were the Mechas created by Professor Daimonji along with his assistant Sakon Gen and the top creed of Earth's scientists, to protect the Earth from any and all threats coming from space. Daimonji would then seek out and enlist the help of special talented individuals with some level of Telepathic Abilities to operate the Mechas.
The Daiku Maryu
The principle land, air, aquatic and Space Vehicle, as well Fortress, for the series' Protagonists, which Resemble a Dragon (though at time it is also describe as a Dinosaur as well). It was largely Blue with two rows of Grey Spikes on the back and a Red wingspan on front and tail. It sport a Orange color dragon like head with large horns and small one in the middle, with a split lower jaw and four big teeth. Two legs with tank treads serve as both landing gear and support when doing the Volution Protect Mode, and two more tank tread located at the tail. It's hull is compose of Zolmanium, a rare metal found on Earth and which is what the other Mechas are also made off. On the Bottom of the Daiku Maryu lies a series of Rocket Boosters for take off. Often, the Battle Cry of the Daiku Maryu would sound like Godzilla's and Rodan's roar, though more so with the former.
The Daiku Mayru entered the Hall of Fame, been the first Support Combat Fortress/Robot Vessel in the Mecha Genre; up until then, the Main Mecha(s) of any given series of would have a Battleship or Aircraft as support vehicle, be launched from the Science/Military Facility it was house on and to go to the Enemy location.
The Vessel is under the Command of Dr. Daimonji, the Chief Scientist; Pete Richardson serving as Captain; Sakon Gen served as its Chief Engineer and Assistant Scientist to Daimonji; Midori Fujiyama was the Radar and Communications Officer; and Hachiro, the Team mascot who tag along and sneaked on pilots' other Mechas, specially Sanchiro or Yamagatake, on their excursions in the field.
Daiku Maryu's Arsenal
Turrets: Cannons mostly on the Forward part, with an auxiliary cannon located at the tip of the tail. These had been seeing either firing projectiles, rockets or freeze rays.
Missile Launchers: located on the Red Wing spans and on the two Most forward spikes on the neck.
Miracle Driller Missiles: two large spinning missiles created by Sakon that locked onto the feet of the ship, they serve as drillers to burrow the ship's way underground and as well piercing attacks. A smaller variant is made for Gaiking. These would be fired as three parts that would come together as one.
Giant Cutter: A giant Blade comes from the bottom of the Daiku Maryu.
Dragon Cutters: blades fired from the Wingspan.
Big Horn: a giant claw really, that comes from the Launching pad. Often used to grab and crush monsters. Later it becomes a Mandible component for the Vogue Eye – whether it could use the same purpose while connected to the Module is unknown.
Zeus Missiles: only seeing in Ep.28, are massive missiles used against the Spider Comet.
The Vogue Eye: a new head component used only on the last 2 episodes of the series, and combines the Big Horn as part of the Module. The eyes fire a beam called Thunder Eye, and the tip of the nose is itself a Laser Cannon. It was one of the last upgrades done to the Daiku Maryu.
Missile Cannons: two large cannon come out from the bottom of the neck and fire Nuclear Projectiles. Only seeing in Episode 43 and was one of the last weapons upgrades of the Daiku Maryu.
Volution Protect: Daiku Maryu would role itself in a ring like pattern called Volution Protect, often used to counter the effects of the Death Cross Phenomenon and other attacks. However, later, this mode can become a Spin Attack, with the rows of spikes in the Back clap tight, the Daiku Maryu becoming one massive Saw like projectile called Screw Rotation, a variant of this attack, with the help of Gaiking's Death Fire becomes the Raging Fire Wheel Cutter attack.
Volution Discharge: Seeing once in Episode 17, "Howl, Nessar! Ocean Battle!". After been swallowed by the Angyloer, Daimonji orders to transferred the Energy Output into the Volution Mode; as the Mecha releases from the mode, it makes contact with the Monster's inner hull and the Energy is disperse through Angyloer, causing an Feedback that destroys the Beast from the inside out allowing the Daiku Maryu to escape.
Finally the Daiku Maryu is capable of using both Hydro Blazer and Saur Geyser.
Known locations: the Bridge and Command Center, the large Conference Room, the smaller Meeting Room, Crew Quarters (often of the main protagonists), the Hospital, Lab, Computer Room, Kitchen, Observatory, Hangar Bay for the Mechas, the Launch Pad Tunnerl, and the Power Reactor room(s).
Daiku Maryu General's Specs (As provided in Ep.8, "The Daiku Maryu gone Mad").
Length 400 Meters,
Weight at 38000 Tons.
Power Output: Nuclear Power, Photon Power Magnetic Power.
Speed: Speed of Light in Space travel, Mach 3 when in the air, 200 km on land and 120 knots at sea.
Crew Compliment: 68.
Daiku Maryu's Kills: The Devil of the Desert (from eps. 13 & 14); Angyoler (Ep.17); Kaikon (Ep.19); Devil Jaguar(ep.21); Gokibuler(Ep.25); Double Eagle(ep.31); Blood Buffalo (albeit with the help of Gaiking, Ep.34); Golden Leo(Ep.36); King Cobra (Ep.41, though Gaiking provided assistance to achieve it); Kamakirin, Ganimons and Dragonder (in Episodes 43 & 44); Finally General Desmon (Ep.44).
Gaiking
Piloted by Sanshiro Tsuwabaki, is the other Principle Mecha of the team and it is largely comprise of three parts: Part one, which makes the back Torso and Arms and contain the wings; Part 2 which are the legs; Part 3, which is the head of the Daiku Maryu itself, becomes the front Torso and contains Gaiking's head. The Pilot's cockpit is located in the head; Following its Open Face Upgrades, the Grill pattern of the Mouth Plate was replace with a full one (which is an odd design change, as Gaiking would breath Fire from then on, something it didn't do before Face Open was added).
Unlike other of Go Nagai's Mecha's, Gaiking did not had the general disposition to be ineffective in underwater Combat, but was weak to Extreme levels of Heat.
Gaiking Arsenal
Counter Punch: as with many other of Go Nagai's Mechas, Gaiking fires its Punches like Rockets.
Counter Cross: the two Red color Cross shape plates located on its legs becomes throwing or blunt weapon, as well could be use as Swords.
Double Cross: Both Counter Cross are use.
Counter Kick: A high speed Kick Attack.
Killer Bite: the Mouth of the Torso can be use for crushing bites.
Hand Missiles: small hand-launched missiles.
Hydro Blazer: An energy ball is fired from the nose of the Skull-Torso; with Sanshiro's own Telekinetic abilities, he can redirect the attack calling it the Miracle Pitch, after the signature move he invented from his days as a Pitcher.
Saur Geyser: Another Energy base attack, fired from the Eye Holes of the Skull Torso. These are a Pink and Blue beam (changed to a Red Beam later) that tangles in a spiral with each other.
Desper Sight: Laser Beams fire from Gaiking's eyes.
Cutting Blade: A row of blades come out from Gaiking's Back for fly by attacks.
Back Shredder: A razor-sharp blade is thrown from the wings.
Paralyzer: an energy discharge release from the horns on Gaiking's head, causing a destructive Feedback on the Monsters.
Miracle Driller Missiles (Gaiking Variant): a smaller variant of the Daiku Maryu's missiles made for Gaiking that lock to its forearms. They pretty much do the same as those of the Daiku Maryu.
Open Face: one of the final upgrades given to Gaiking which debuted in Ep.23, after it was damage by the Moon Condor. When Iron Ore was found on the moon, Sakon not only repairs Gaiking, but upgrades it. The face would shed its hull, revealing the inner construct. With new weapons added.
Gaiking Missiles: missiles fired from port holes below the eyes.
Abshock lights: a blind light is fired from the eyes. Serve as search lights in the dark.
Death Eye: Another Optic Beam Attack, but this would combine the Laser Beams into a one single focus beam.
Death Fire: a Stream of fire is release from Gaiking's Mouth. When Gaiking combined with Daiku Maryu to complete the Volution Protect, it release its Death Fire during the Screw Attack to make the Raging Fire Wheel Cutter attack.
Auxilary Support Team:
These are a series of Auxiliary Excursion vehicles which provide assistance to Daiku Maryu and Gaiking, or serve as distractions while the Main Mecha is not available.
Skylar: A Pterasaur combat jet, piloted by Fan-Li, its only weaponry is Skylar Missiles fired from the two ports located on either side of neck, beside this it had speed. The Cockpit was on the head.
Skylar sports One Dark Monster Kill: Tun Yun Lein Pen from Ep.10, Fan Li seeking revenge on its pilot for the death of his younger brother.
Nessar: A Elasmosaurus theme Mecha, which serve as the Aquatic Vehicle, as well secondary Flight Vehicle when Skylar is not around; it is piloted by Bunta Hayami. It's weaponry includes Nessar Fire, a stream of flames fired from the mouth, Nessar Beams, fired from the eyes, and Nessar Missile and Torpedoes, fired from the ports below the neck. When in Underwater mode, Nessar retracts is legs and combine its wings to make a large black Dorsal Fin. It also had a Protective Barrier for defense and had tractor beam. Nessar had tank treads in the bottom of its feet, but could walk on all fours. Its cockpit was located on the head.
To date, its only sports one Dark Monster kill: Takomander from Ep.39, though it was Fan Li piloting Nessar, seeking revenge (AGAIN) for the death of his friend, Chan, as well, Daiku Maryu provided assistance in holding the Monster.
Bazolar: A Ceratopsids theme tank Mecha, which serves as the land attack auxiliary vehicle and is piloted by the head strong and Egotistical Yamagatake. It sport a Drilling Probe; Bazolar Cannon, a turret that comes out from the mouth which fire Bazolar Missiles; Bazolar Rays fired from the antennas above the eyes; as well was capable of head on ramming attacks. A single Rocket booster is located below the Tank for short distance flight and landings.
Of the three Auxiliaries, Bazolar, like Mazinger Z's Boss does with his Boss Borot, goes through the more comedic expressions, development, at times gets upgrades and accidents, in large part thanks to Yamagatake's own ego.
At first, Bazolar could only do short distance flights, a flight mechanism upgrade made of junk would be briefly given to it with the help of a veteran allowing to achieve flight, though later it acquires an Anti Gravity device created by Exile Zelans, which he sacrifices to destroy a Dark Monster. However, later in the series, is capable of long distance flight, but is not mention when the upgrade was made. Another upgrade gave it mechanical arms and legs to sumo wrestle Nekong, but these were rip off easily after it crash when Gaiking Intervened.
Interestingly, despite been a comedy relief robot, Bazolar sports surprisingly the most Black Monster kills of the Auxiliary Support Team: Taking out Tokage Gata, Saru Gata, Konchuu Gata and Tori Gata in Episode 9, seeking revenge for the death of a dear friend, and Keroger from Ep.20, by using an Zelan Anti-gravity device on the Monster's weapon, destroying it.
Mini X-1: it was Midori's Starfighter, though if it was a combat Jet of sorts is unknown as it only makes an appearance in Ep.12 and was destroyed by the Zelans after she and Sanshiro came to explore the Japanese Alps following the deaths of Mountain Climbers, and no replacement for it is ever built.

This was one of the first Super Robot anime I ever saw (along with Voltron), and the first Go Nagai production I watched, and seeing it, I can say that Gaiking itself is pretty prototypical of the kind of Super Robots he has made (from the grilled face plate to the horned head to the "ROKKETO PANCHI!" type of attack). I saw the Force Five release of the anime when I was around seven years old, and it stuck with me ever since, helped facilitate my love for Super Robots.
So while I may not be its biggest fan, in fact I often find it boring and dragging in spots as it just seems to follow the typical Super Robot formula, I will say it's had a profound effect on my life.
