Probably one of my favorite poems...just a cutsey little love story. It's clean.
I do written commissions--help me help out a friend in need. She needs rent money. =[ 100% of proceeds go to her, I get practice writing on-demand in return.
See my journal for details.
I can't dance a jig or sing songs from Beijing
But I can prove my love with this aluminum ring.
Remember when us two were a little bit small
And dreamed of the big kids that hang at the mall
And laughed and would sing our Sunday School Hymns
While that redheaded teacher's, our favorite Miss Nim's,
Bright yellow canary would hoot and would tweet
Bobbing its head right in time with the beat?
Remember when I asked you to that one school dance,
You looked and you laughed and you said "not a chance"
But when you found out Sally Mae stood me up,
You went off to find her and then beat her up
Until all of the boys were too scared to dance
And then I decided to take one more chance?
You had your hair up, and your dress, it hung down,
And everyone but me was wearing a frown
When they saw just how graceful you stepped 'cross the floor
And when we stopped dancing they all cried for more.
I remember years later, us two in the park,
We saw a small girl, her mom called her 'Lark.'
She had on her finger a small twisted thing,
A small silver gumwrapper turned into a ring.
I saw your eyes glow, and the smile on your face.
My decision was made while we sat in that place--
I may not have the money to buy anything,
but I can prove my love with this aluminum ring.
Wintergreen Mint, your favorite flavor of all--
And if you'd be delighted, can we wed in the Fall?
