I've finally finished redesigning my fursona. Maybe I shouldn't call it a redesign, more of an upgrade, I guess?
It started when I took a course called "Conceptual Characters" by Woulter Tulp, which is fully focused on character design. I decided to put stuff in practice by giving Garrett some needed sprucing up with what I learned. Well, it took way longer than what I estimated it would. I gathered tens of reference images, drew more than 10 different sketches, 6 pages of text with descriptions, backstory and species definition and re-drew this same artwork you're seeing right now three times all over again. And I feel like it was worth it. I've learned SO MUCH in the process. Not only I cemented what I've learned about character design in the course and got rid of some terrible vices I had while drawing, I learned tons of techniques about line weight, simplification, colors, shapes and how to make my art overall more appealing.
I felt like before I over-detailed artworks too much. Not in a beautiful way like a berserk or vagabond manga, just... making it dirty. And I've never been into doing that either way, I just did that because it was a vice. Now I feel more confident in showing more with less lines, which is something I want to keep doing. Expect my art from now on to look different. At least that's what I intend on doing, let's see if I'm able to do it and make it look good.
Other massive improvement was I made friends! And I want to thank them. I want to thank:
Ayden, for helping me with deciding what to do with my horns.
Phinn, for helping me with shape language overall and so many other little tidbits, he also made a BANGER looking sketch of Garrett I used as refence to help in the redesign.
And specially, Finn, for helping me with SO MANY THINGS I wouldn't be able to list them all. Dude helped me with Line Weight, Shapes, Design Choices, hyping me up in general, SO MUCH HELP WITH PROPORTIONS and so much else. They also made sketches to help me with the design.
And last but not least, everyone in my channel that helped a lot and didn't go crazy with so many random sketches I kept throwing at them. If you feel like you want to follow the process, you can check my message history at My channell.
All that said, I've still got to show ya'll the full body. I made 10+ sketches of Garrett by now, but I still haven't got to finish an artwork of him, it's on my list and it's a priority, I'll do it... maybe soon? I can't promise, because it's VERY difficult for me, the new proportions are still difficult.
