Why's he so far behind on his bills?

Here's my dad's response:

"It all started in November when I had to go to the emergency room to have my stomach checked out. They did a full CT scan and they couldn’t find anything!!?. I still have a lot of pain and the bill is $10,500. I didn’t have health insurance at the time and didn’t qualify for Medi-Cal. Then in February I was laid off from work and tried unemployment for the first time ever. It took 5 weeks to start and that’s when I started falling behind. I found another job within a month but it wasn’t full time like I thought. Getting that job canceled the unemployment so I was making less than the unemployment. I got another full time job a few weeks later that I really like and get paid every week however catching up is the hard part when the rent keeps going at the end of each month. I’m also on a payment plan with PG&E and that’s pretty pricey as well. It’s just so expensive being on your own nowadays!. I have food but barely and nothing really healthy 🙄🙏❤️"

He lives far from me (about 5 hours away) but drove down a few weeks ago to visit and pick up some food/supplies from a family member, and he is severely underweight. Never in my life have I seen my dad so skinny and I'm genuinely very worried about his health as he also has Type 2 Diabetes.

My dad also pawned all of his keyboards at a pawn shop (creating music is one of his favorite hobbies and he's very good at it!) so I'm hoping that I'll be able to help him get those back at some point.

I hate that I can't do more for him right now but I'm currently trying to get by with commission work + applying to more jobs.
