Character

Shreya Mishra was the middle child in a well-renowned lineage of cow-taurs in a town in the lush forests of the state of Kerala in India. Her family was worshipped, not only because cows are seen as holy beings by the Hindus, but even more so that with their magical capabilities, they managed to cast a protective shield around the region, protecting their slice of paradise from the Wellspring War outside. Even long after the war, the Mishra-family was worshipped like they were the manifestation of the Gods on Earth.

Shreya grew up in a luxurious and privileged environment, a life many would dream of. Yet, she was never really happy with it; in fact, it felt it was slowly choking her. All the praise she got, all the riches they had and all the luxury they possessed, she never felt she had earned it. And being set on a pedestal all the time made her feel distant from the community. No matter how she tried to merge with the rest of society, she was always being treated differently, never as an equal. Her parents dragged her back, saying such things were "beneath her". She was being trained to become a magician, just like the rest of the family. After all, she had the "hump" on her back for it, the source of magic of every member of her family. But unlike them, she couldn't manage to complete a single spell, and grew frustrated with her failures, and the pressure she was put upon broke her. She wanted to get out of this life, somewhere her life wasn't determined by her lineage. She was willing to do anything for that. She often looked at the stars and wondered what life elsewhere on Earth would be like... or even elsewhere in the universe.

She decided to seek opportunity far away from home. The only problem was how to get there; she was under strict watch, and she couldn't leave on her own without anyone noticing. But she was a clever girl, and managed to get a contact in Starfleet that would help to sneak her out unnoticed. In exchange, she would be stationed on one of the ships as a civilian crew member. Having no qualifications of her own, she accepted a job as a janitor, as it was her ticket to get out of a stressful environment. The escape was a success, assuming her middle name Sumati as her new name, and a few days afterwards, she found herself in uniform on the UFS Pioneer's maiden voyage.

Life aboard the starship was very different from what Sumati was used to. Although she was the only cow-taur aboard, paradoxically she didn't stand out that much, as the crew was so diverse that "normal" crew members like humans were the ones who looked out of place. Most of all, she was treated by her colleagues as their equal, and she could be herself here. She took her "simple" work with pride, knowing she would dare to do "servant's work" that wouldn't be respected enough back home. As her job didn't keep her busy full-time, she took a second job as a waitress in the ship's mess hall, hoping she could socialise with the crew more. Other crew members noticed she was working her socks off, overburdening herself as if she had something to prove. She was directed to the ship's counselor, Lydia, who diagnosed her with Imposter Syndrome. Lydia understood that the environment Sumati had grew up in had fostered doubts about herself in her. Lydia recommended Sumati to visit her periodically to treat these problems. She also asked if she had any ambitions, and Sumati said she would be willing to get a higher qualified job, as long as she had really earned it. Lydia recommended her to study, which Sumati did. But it soon turned out that she had a lot of trouble doing theoretical subjects. But her passion for food and good cuisine led her to another potential career path. Now she's studying to become a cook, and hopes she would soon be hired in the ship's kitchen.

She has a relationship with the ship's surgeon, Dr. Tria Dalton, who found her one night cleaning the hallways. Sumati was shocked by her appearance, a wolf-taur who was missing her back half. Tria said she was born that way, as the back half of another taur in a magical incident. She mentions that she had always wished for a connection with someone at her back, just to feel "whole" again after such a long time. Sumati said she'd volunteer if she could. To her surprise, Tria said there was a possibility, and she took her to the surgeon's quarters. There Tria managed to separate her back half, and connected the stumps of their front halfs together. The sensation was hard to describe, as memories from both of them went to the other person. She had never felt such a deep connection before. Sincethen, out of solidarity, she often walks around the ship with only her front half, leaving her back half in her quarters, and only reconnects it when she goes sporting in the fitness hall to keep her entire body in shape. At first she was having trouble with finding stability in this new shape, but her front legs quickly got stronger and she quickly found it had become second nature to her. She also finds it much more easy to milk herself this way (her milk is well appreciated by the cooking staff).

Here we have one of the lower-deckers of the Pioneer, a girl who seemingly had it all, but missed the most important thing of all: connection with others. Bringing herself down into a humble position made her happier in the end than she could ever be in her "golden cage"...
