That always was a peculiar question about furry babies and furry pets. Stan Sakai made his own unique answer by having all the simple animals being those little lizards that appear throughout the Usagi Yojimbo comics, no other "animals" are shown, since everyone is anthro. This comic gave me a good laugh, especially the look on that scared little kitten boy's face, he looks so cute.
