I'm reminded of Little Foot/Drift, in which yinglets that learn how to make fire are taught the story of the "Child of Fire", and "licked by the flame" (branded by a hot iron or something similar) in order to learn to respect it.
Maybe the theatrics serves a similar purpose, keeping the "average yinglet" from figuring out just how everything works and/or being scared of the crazy ying with the burning sticks. ^_^
