This started off as a mini sketch for their poses, they just looked better when I drew them like this for the picture. There's was something about cartooning: Don't be afraid to break the model; it's when you change your character for the scenario, such as a hug; the arms are extended to reach around the hugged character because the arms are short. If they were long prior they'd drag across the ground.
