Edgar Woodard the third awoke to the sound of his phone blaring an alarm. The terrier recognized it almost immediately as the ringtone he had set for his grandmother, so he would know to avoid answering. No doubt she was just going to pester him about when he was going to get a job, or find a wife, or berate him for sullying the family name, or some other old person nonsense. Edgar stretched lazily in his king size bed, as eventually the phone stopped ringing. The movement however, informed him of a mild headache he was sporting. Holding his head in his hands, he tried recollecting why he might have such a headache. Slowly some of the previous night began to come back to him. He had been out at the club, as usual, having a few drinks with the boys. It was a pretty standard evening, at least until that girl had come over. What was her name? Eh, no matter. The brown furred cat was small, but well endowed in the chest and hip regions. Edgar, Eddie to his friends, didn’t remember who she came with, but she’d almost immediately latched onto him, much to the jealousy of the other guys. She was a bit of an airhead and it didn’t take much before she was drunk and feeling Eddie’s (slight) muscles through his shirt. He was about to suggest they head to one of the more private rooms, when a fight broke out at the bar. Once the commotion died down, she was gone, nowhere to be found. Disappointed, Eddie had consoled himself with more booze, which explained the headache this morning. With a sigh he climbed out of bed in seek of a remedy. Heading downstairs in his robe, he wondered at the quietness of his father’s SoCal mansion before remembering that father and mother were gone on another business trip. He shrugged to himself, wondering why a company needed so many meetings. He found painkillers in a kitchen cabinet, then started foraging in the fridge for breakfast. Deciding a leftover steak would be an appropriate start, he was about to tear into it when his smartwatch pinged. Groaning, he looked at the offending object. It showed a reminder for a meeting. ‘Oh shit!” he exclaimed, “The tennis match!” It was scheduled for 10AM, and it was already 9:45. The steak forgotten, he sprinted for his room to find clothes, then to his car and tore down the driveway towards the tennis courts.
Eddie arrived only a few minutes late, having run several red lights. But it turned out he needn’t have bothered. Once he arrived, he checked his phone and saw that the friend he’d been supposed to play against had cancelled. He huffed in annoyance, and started texting if anyone else wanted to come. No one responded to him for several minutes, so he figured it was a wasted trip. But then, as he was about to start his car, a familiar figure walked past. He looked up and saw her. It was the cat from last night! She seemed to be pacing around at the entrance to the tennis club. Eddie hopped out of his car and tried to casually walk over to her. He timed it so they would meet as he was entering the club.
“Oh! I’m so sorry!” Eddie said, gently crashing into her.
She gave a little squeal as she nearly tumbled over, clutching at his arm to save herself. She started to say something, face filled with annoyance, but that melted into joy as she looked up at his face and then exclaimed, “Oh Edgar, it’s you!”
He said, in mock surprise, “Oh hey!” He still couldn’t remember her name, “Fancy meeting you here. I lost track of you last night.”
“Oh, when the fight broke out, I was terrified, and I just ran away. I missed you so much, but I was just too scarred.” she replied.
“Oh, well you shouldn’t have worried, I took care of the problem myself.” he lied.
“Really?” she said, eyes widening in admiration, still clutching his arm.
“Yep!” he said, puffing his chest out, “Beat those guys up and threw them out! The owner of the club even came down to thank me personally.”
“Oh wow! Edgar you’re a right langer!” Eddie wasn’t sure what that meant, but the slight Irish accent added a touch of exoticness that drove him mad.
“Oh thanks. Anyway, what are you doing here?”
“Oh I was just waiting for my friend to play tennis with, but then they canceled, and I don’t know what to do now.” she said.
Convenient, he thought, “Well I was just going in to practice. Do you want to come play a bit?”
“You play here? Oh that’d be grand! Although, I don’t know how to play, my friend was going to show me.” she said.
“Heh, well you’re lucky today. I happen to be a master tennis player.”
“Really? Oh wow!”
“Sure. I play here at least twice a week.” He didn’t, at most it was twice a month but he wasn’t going to tell. “At least when I’m not at competitions, of course. I have to travel to those all the time. Why I’m one of the star players in the entire state!” he exclaimed as he led her in.
“Oh Edgar! I didn’t know you were so important! Should you really be wasting time with little old me?” she practically fawned over him.
“I always have time for someone so pretty!” He grinned at her, as her ears blushed. “And please, call me Eddie.”
A few minutes later, they had their own court and were getting ready to play. He picked up his racket and asked, “Are you ready?”
“Almost!” came the reply, “I just need some sunscreen.”
Sunscreen? Why did she need sunscreen? Didn’t she have fur? Confused, he turned to look at her.
“See?” she said, holding a bottle out, “I need it to keep my nose from burning.”
“Take all the time you need babe.” he said, staring at her. He didn’t mind waiting while she coated her nose with the lotion. He had an excellent view. Her blouse was open at the top, and her shorts were almost nonexistent, putting on quite the show of fur covered cleavage and thigh. She was practically begging for it.
“Take all the time you need.”
This was going to be easy, he thought to himself.
