While I can't speak completely for the boy. We mortals all endure trauma differently, I'd hazard they're tears of relief
You saw what that sister did. Chances are likely he was forced to bottle a lot of emotions in order to keep from suffering more of her "discipline"
Finally being able to hold you, knowing he's safe in your presence? The dam's broke. And now he can let his emotions finally flow.
Sadly we mortals often tear when overwhelmed with emotions.

His tears will dry eventually, especially when it sinks in that he has his new mother and is free of his personal hell.
