ー I still don't understand where we're going, Grandma? ー he walked through the chill of the forest at night, but it felt like the cold of a thousand winters. Not long ago, he had been dragged out of his warm cozy bed, but now he was weaving behind the old woman, kicking moss and sparse branches.
ー You'll see everything now, Karasu, just be patient for a bit. We have to be patient for a little while.
"Just a little patience "ー that was literally the motto of his life. "Be patient for a little while, and my parents will come." "Be patient for a little while, and I'll tell you what happened to them. "Be patient for a little while, and you'll understand everything."
But the parents didn't come, Grandmother didn't explain anything, and Karasu didn't understand anything until now.
The boy tiredly rubbed his sleepy eyes, which did not want to open after such a sweet dream. He was slowly getting used to the darkness, and now he could tell with certainty that they were now not far from the stream near where Karasu liked to play with his friends.
ー Stop! ー A loud voice sounded ahead, the boy tensed up and straightened up like a string. But he still tried to step forward and stand next to Nana, although he was insanely scared, but the woman resolutely put her hand forward. A rumble of thunder was heard in the sky. Karasu involuntarily shuddered.
ー Don't be afraid, dear, it's the spirits guiding you and speaking to you, ー the old woman smiled. ー Hello, Akira.
The cloaked man the boy had just noticed nodded and waved in the air, lighting his torch.
ー You're puny for fourteen years old, ー the talking hood grinned.
Karasu's lip instinctively twitched upwards and he frowned, but after inhaling and exhaling a few times as Nana taught him, he proudly straightened his shoulders and raised his chin.
ー And you're too rude for someone who didn't even have the conscience to introduce himself, ー the teenager said deafly.
A barking laughter sounded from under the hood, the Granny at Karasu's side hummed contentedly.
ー Well done Tomoko, you've raised an excellent warrior. Let's go.
Karasu looked confusedly at Nana, who followed the man she called Akira without further question. Their brief dialog looked as if they had known each other for days, if not years.
The sleep that had been trying to bring the boy back into his arms for so long was lifted like an arm. Now he saw everything clearly and distinctly. His heart pounded loudly and measuredly, beating away with each step that brought them closer to the invisible goal.
Finally, a few meters ahead, between the trees, Karasu saw the light of many torches, similar to those carried by their escort in front of them. At the same moment, Granny Tomoko fell a little behind and leveled up with her grandson.
ー Karasu, you should know. Everything you're about to see and hear ー is very important and serious. You must not be afraid of anything. I've taught you a lot of things all these years, but after tonight, it will seem like child's play compared to the world that will be laid at your feet. Don't forget what you already know, be brave and wise. May your heart be pure.
Hearing such a strange admonition, he swallowed, but kept up the pace of their strange procession. The child within this young man wanted to scream and cry and ask what was going on. But the growing man knew that tonight would be one of the most important nights of his life.
ー Naoki and Keitashi's son, come over, ー Karasu flinched when he heard his parents' names. Another person in the clearing, whose face was once again hidden by the hood of a long cloak, reached out to him. The boy obediently approached him. ー We've been waiting for you and we're glad to see you.

Karasu bowed respectfully as he would do in front of any person older than him, regardless of position. The only exception was the one who called him puny in the forest. The young man cowered, trying to find that acquaintance of Nana's, but it was no use.
Now that he was mingled with the crowd of similar "hoods" in the clearing, it was impossible to determine their gender or age. He immediately realized that Nana was also standing somewhere out there among them.
Now, Karasu's heart skipped a couple beats, his breath hitched and shuddered in the air.
ー You have nothing to fear, Karasu, ー the same man who invited him into the clearing said in a soft tone. ー Today is your most important day after the day you were born. Today you will become a man, today you will become one of us.
The boy couldn't wait to ask what he would be by becoming 'one of them', but he kept silent, feeling in his gut that a lot of things depended on his behavior right now.
One of the cloaked figures approached them and held out a small, slightly curved dagger with a worn wooden handle to the man in front of Karasu. It was not decorated or forged from any special steel. On the contrary, the weapon looked even too simple and primitive. The boy's heart ached in anticipation. It wasn't fear, more a clammy feeling of the unknown. But he staunchly tried not to show any sign of being affected by anything that was happening.
ー Sage Tomoko, come and endow our son with the strength and sense of our ancestors ー the great and wise Hunters and Guardians of the human world. Grant him the same wisdom and courage. Let him possess the knowledge of the Spirits that lead us on our path.
Karasu couldn't stand it and still looked around when he heard Nana's name. Just like the others, hidden by her hood, she slowly approached her grandson, bowed for some reason and handed him a bowl with a strange smelling herbal concoction.
With trembling hands, the young man took the offered drink and looked questioningly at the man in front of him.
ー Drink it, ー quietly, as if with a smile, he said.
Karasu obediently took a sip, then another, after the third he couldn't stop anymore. With each movement, it was as if molten metal and blood flowed down his throat. Each sip began with pain in his throat, and ended with a kind of knot in the middle of his stomach. Everyone around him cheered him on, they shouted something about drinking every last drop, and Karasu did so. The last sip felt like a thousand blades piercing through the boy's chest area, he couldn't take it anymore, he screamed and fell to his knees.
Perhaps he only thought so, but when his knees made contact with the soft surface of the grass, the entire clearing shook and a shockwave spread out in all directions. Karasu was breathing heavily, trying not to lose consciousness. His hands rested listlessly on his knees, his chin touching his chest.
Finally, he opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw ー the unusually clear and bright light of the torches. The young man squinted and discerned every layer of light in the flames, it was now within his eye's reach. He saw sparks separating from the flames. He saw a squirrel running between the branches. Somehow it moved unimaginably slowly. Karas wouldn't even have to strain to grab the small animal now. But why would he grab it?
Food. He was hungry. His mouth filled with thick, viscous saliva. The boy immediately felt a strange previously unknown metallic tart flavor.
ー Karasu, look at me! ー suddenly a man in a cloak said surprisingly clearly and loudly. He moved unnaturally slowly while holding out the very same knife to the young man. ー You must make the Wall accept you. Open your heart to her. You know what to do.
Unknown from where, but he really knew. Karasu rose from his knees, took up his weapon, and turned simultaneously with the man towards what had been beckoning him for so long.
With each step he took, he came closer and closer to her. She called to him, she sang, she beckoned, and she also promised to kill, to destroy if you proved unworthy. Karasu was sure she would not reject him. The young man looked at the knife in his hand and without hesitation the blade sliced through the skin on his palm. The pain pierced him with a quick and brief flash, then subsided as suddenly as it had appeared. A thin scarlet trickle flowed down his hand and forearm. With a stone face, the one who was still a fourteen-year-old boy today leaned his palm against the shimmering and shimmering blob of energy.
The matter all seemed to come alive. The wall spoke to him, it whispered. Being so close to it made every cell in his body boil and beg for mercy. But it was pain compared to unprecedented pleasure. She screamed and cradled, she killed and gave life. She had replaced his mother, his sister, his future wife. He sought only her, though his mind screamed for him to save himself. All of his past, present, and future converged on one point. It was the Wall of Partition.
Suddenly, the light flicker turned into a whole storm of colors. The rift flashed a million hues, each one caressing Karasu's eye. He smiled. The wall embraced him.
Karasu bowed respectfully as he would do in front of any person older than him, regardless of position. The only exception was the one who called him puny in the forest. The young man cowered, trying to find that acquaintance of Nana's, but it was no use.
