Once in the water, Kyle brought Remy out to a certain spot.
He climbed onto his board and showed him what to do.
"Make sure you're on all the way," he told him. "And remember to face the waves, unless you want to get-"
Just then, a large wave rolled through, nearly knocking them off their boards.
-"splashed."
Remy, maintaining his balance, paddled out to the forming walls of water before him.
"Now," said Kyle, "before it hits, swing sideways. That way you'll surf over."
Remy waited for the wave to reach its highest point. He did as was told and swung his board sideways before bracing for impact.
The wave nearly overwhelmed him as he reached the top. The downward force swept him down and the undertow nearly separated Remy from his board. But he managed to maintain his grip.
Kyle paddled up to him. "That was pretty good," he smiled. "You'll get the hang of it. No pun intended."
Remy laughed. "I sure hope so!"
"I know you will--Whoa, heads up!"
A large wave swept down and swallowed the friends.
Remy tumbled and spun in the undertow. When he popped up to the surface, he swam back for his board, but the strong currents made it difficult for him.
Though dizzy, he managed to climb aboard.
He saw Kyle paddling up to him.
"You okay?" he asked. "That was a pretty big one."
Remy nodded. "I know, really. I'm fine."
They turned to see Bradley swimming through the rough seas and making his way towards them.
"Why don't you take a break?" Kyle told Remy. "And I'll show Bradley how it's done."
"Yeah," said Bradley. "Take a rest. It's my turn now."
Remy agreed and gave his board to Bradley. He swam back and watched them from the shore.
