As Carla pushed open the door, she saw a girl that bore many similarities to her new form. Her short height, round face, and yellow eyes were all signs that this person was somehow related to what had happened. Dressed in a white coat with stripes similar to Carla’s, the girl sat crumpled on the floor sobbing into her black gloves.
Carla stepped over to the girl, staring down at her with compassion in her eyes. The girl looked up at her as she approached, wiping tears from her eyes as she did. “Wh- what do you want?” she asked between the sobs.
As Carla got a closer look, she noticed something familiar about her. The tone of her voice, despite being drowned in sorrow and in a language that was identifiably not english, sounded like something she had heard before. The more she stood pondering the confusing situation, the more the pieces began to connect. No… it couldn’t be…
“Markus!?” Carla asked with shock and confusion.
The girl stared back at her with an equal amount of confusion. “W- wait, how do you know my name?”
“It’s me, Carla!” she responded, a sense of joy welling in her as she realized that her boyfriend hadn’t gone missing. She kneeled down, wrapping Markus in her embrace. For a few seconds that sat there, Carla enjoying the hug while Markus sat pondering the situation.
“So… this happened to you, too?” Markus asked, sorrow refusing to leave her voice as she motioned to herself.
“Seems like it,” she responded. “I like it though. You look cute this way.”
A look of surprise lit up Markus’s face as he blushed at the compliment. “You don’t think I look like a freak?”
“Of course not!” Carla responded, helping Markus to her feet. She wrapped her arm around Markus, giving him a warm smile.
“Well… how are we gonna change back?” Markus asked.
“Let’s not worry about that right now,” Carla responded. “Let’s just enjoy this while it last!” With those words, the two of them stood side by side, enjoying the warmth of togetherness. In the confusing times that both of them were experiencing, they felt that it was pleasant to take solace in each other. And so they sat, savoring the precious moments that they were able to share regardless of their gender or species.
