Today is Shark Awareness Day! Lots of people misunderstand sharks and give them lots of hate because of movies like Jaws, but they are wonderful and beautiful animals
I'm going to use today as an excuse to share shark facts that I like ^^
Whale sharks have teeth in their eyes. Scientists are not sure why, but believe it may be a method of warding off parasites
They are also the largest species of shark, and the largest living fish alive today
A third whale shark fact, scientists who study whale sharks use a program that reads the spots on their backs, which are like a thumbprint and completely unique to an individual. This program was created by NASA to read stars, but it works just as well for a whale shark's spots
Thresher sharks have very long tail fins, which they use like a whip to smack and stun fish which they then eat
Goblin sharks have the ability to extend their jaws out of their body up to three inches to lunge at prey
Many sharks breath through a method called ram ventilation, where they have to keep moving to get water flowing over their gills or they will suffocate
Greenland sharks live for a VERY long time. Their eye lenses grow in a way that none of it is ever replaced and just grown over. Scientists once used this to figure out which layer of the lens received radiation from the testing of nuclear bombs during WWII to determine its age
Greenland shark's ages are important to scientists because they live extremely long. They only reach sexual maturity at 150 years of age, and may live upwards of 500 years!
They also move incredibly slowly, at about 0.7 miles per hour, earning them the nickname "Sleeper sharks"
Cookie cutter sharks are one of the smallest shark species. They take cookie sized bites out of large animals like whales or larger sharks. They even sometimes bite submarines, which confused the hell out of both the U.S. and Russian military during the cold war until a sub surfaced with one still attached
The Megalodon was the biggest shark to ever live but is unfortunately (for shark lovers like me anyways) extinct. Some believe it may still exist, but everything we know about the shark makes this impossible. Most people also think they look like giant great whites, but they look more like a bull shark that got hit in the face with a frying pan, making it all scrunched up
Bull sharks are able to breath both fresh and salt water, and are one of the few sharks to actually attack humans as prey
Tiger sharks are called the trash cans of the sea and will eat anything. They are another of the few sharks that will eat humans
Most shark attacks are actually due to a shark's curiosity, as they don't have hands and need to bite something in order to investigate it further than just looking at it
