They've used the "mare" and "stallion" terminology on the show before. Anyway, ponies aren't young horses, they're a special breed, smaller than regular horses.

As I understand it, colt equates to boy, filly to girl, stallion to man/male/gentleman, mare to woman/female/lady, and of course foal to baby/child.
