Merry and Opal often travel to the more isolated towns of the Tower, both to peddle wares and possibly barter for some even rarer ones in turn. It's also a great time to explore some of the more "foreign" luxuries that survived integration into the Tower.
Unfortunately, this also means being around places of a somewhat lower quality of living than usual, and Merry, bless her heart, is a little too used to cleaner places.
