Our lil' red lady and her mate have 2 pups. I still haven't pushed the envelope yet to try and get some pics but I have stepped out onto the back porch and seen him just 10 feet away. He didn't run so I left him a dog biscuit (milkbone) and slipped quietly back inside. Once I had gone back in he came up and took the biscuit and headed off down the mountain. Little by little they have adjusted to me and have become less spooky whenever I am about. Not looking to make friends or pets of them... just would like them to know they're always safe with me. This will be the 3rd set of pups that I know of they have had. I am a blessed man.
No foxes? I thought just about everywhere in the US had foxes within a reasonable distance. Me, I have too many critters around the area and I worry. I have four cats and three are hunters though I don't think any go more than 100 yds from the house. But I've seen coyotes in the front yard and lost one of my dearest cats to one a few years back, (Fresh snow told the story). I have 15 acres and have seen fox, and bobcat within a couple hundred yds of the house and cougar frequent the woods in my area and I have a lot of woods on and around my property. My first few years here , I had a wolf Malamute cross that kept guard but he finally passed and I went two years without a guard and the coon took over, (got a photo of 14 on my front porch at once), and the occasional possum and skunk, (been shot at a time or two when stepping off my porch). Also during that time. the deer would come right up to the windows and look in. They were also destroying my fruit and other trees I planted. I finally got a Great Pyrenees! Best dog I ever had and keeps most everything off the property, just gotta get used to the barking, (its a very deep bark so isn't bad at all). If it weren't for my cats, I'd welcome the critters.
Oh wow! No, no foxes seen yet but I keep my hopes up. We've seen possums, no skunks, and we keep a bowl of corn in the side yard for the deer. The back yard is fenced so they can't get my trees. We had a bear out there once, and my son saw a coyote on camera. Oh yes, lots and lots of squirrels. We have the two Huskies, and they'll watch the squirrels, who torment them by staring back from the trees.
14 coons... goodness gracious. The most we've had at one time have been five. Some became brazen enough to come to the door requesting to be fed, but all in all we only have one who has been with us a long time. We named her Baby, and this morning she actually came right out to greet me. I give her a bowl all to herself in the yard so the local alpha female won't bother her.
Life is good...
