"Come out, come out...wherever you are, little lyolf," his voice boomed throughout the grove. He had been tracking her for over six days now. He was tired, hungry, and in need of rest, yet...
Sniffing the air, he tried to detect distinct notes that did not fit the atmosphere. A skilled tracker and sniper, he used various tactics to hunt down all of his prey: some were easy and he could track them down in a matter of seconds after getting a whiff of one of their possessions, or something they had last touched or worn.
And then you had bounties like this one that required more...work. Ironically, he actually enjoyed difficult cases; it made the capture more thrilling.
He had to give her credit though- she had done a phenomenal job of covering her tracks: he expected nothing less from a top kunoichi. Except-
He picked up a pink petal from the ground. So delicate, aromatic, it smelled of a certain lyolf that stopped to smell the flowers- a fatal mistake.
Breaking into a sprint, he dashed through the grove, leaping and dodging over rocks and tree trunks that littered the forest.
The afternoon sun and humidity, along with carrying his gear, was starting to take its toll on his body, as he felt his determined pace starting to wane from fatigue and heat...where the hell was she?!
His determination was suddenly revived as he heard a faint snap in the distance. Could it be...?
He almost missed it over the sounds of the birds around him, naturally camouflaging any other background noise. With a haughty smirk, he raised his gun and shot at a tree about 50 meters away. A barrage of bullets cascaded against the tree, causing the bark to ricochet against her backside. He missed...intentionally: that was a warning. "Last call or I will do it again! And this time it will not miss..."
He WAS persistent. So the rumors were true. Whisper had heard through the grapevine months ago, some disgruntled twits had banded together and hired this sniper to hunt and take her out. Why? They were too cowardly to do so themselves. That...and they feared her! Rightly so but still...
Cautiously, Whisper appeared from behind the tree, tightly clutching her katana. If she was going to die, she was going to die like a proper warrior: in battle.
She had definitely seen better days: she was covered in cuts and debris, and her garb was torn and ragged from running for the last few days. Her walk had a very noticeable limp: she was injured, probably when she stumbled over the root of that tree. Her leg didn't feel broken, but she definitely could not run very far in this condition.
"Not going to put down your weapon huh? Cheeky girl." He was impressed she actually came out rather than tried to attack or try to catch him off guard. He stood there as she limped towards him-
Stature wise, there as a noticeable comparison between the two: him standing at a massive 6'11", while Whisper was about 5'6." He almost had to kneel down to look at her properly, her silver hair glistening in the summer sun. Lowering his weapon, he scrunched up his face as he assessed the assassin shakily standing in front of him.
She was obviously injured and in no condition to fight- at least at her peak condition he was warned about. No, this would not do at all...
"Lyolf: what happened to you?" He pointed to a gash along her inner right thigh, his expression somewhat perplexed and concerned.
She wasn't sure if he was being factious or sincere, "I..I'm fine. Let's get this over with, shall we?"
"Over with? OH! You mean the big, dramatic fight that will ensue between us, leaving one of us injured or mortally wounded? And the other is left to decide what to do with said person?" He let out a boisterous laugh; he seemed...amused as if he was discussing a plot from a story!
Whisper folded her ears back as she raised her weapon up to him, only to have him nonchalantly catch the blade between his massive paws and hold it there. He tilted his head down at her, looking at her in a piteous manner-
"You and I are so much alike. You may not like it, but it's true: we both serve others for our own needs, be it money, power, or to avenge someone. The only difference is, at the end of the day, I am not bound by some preface of whether I am good or evil..."
Her eyes widened in revelation as he gingerly released her blade and nodded at her.
Pulling out some rolled up sheets of paper, he ripped them up in front of her. After which, he handed the now ripped up papers to her. Trying to decipher what the hell was going on and what he just gave her, she tried to read some of the words on the paper, only managing to make out a few words or phrases, though choppy-
"That is, or was...my contract to hunt and terminate you. It is invalid now." He explained as he rummaged through his backpack. He seemed somewhat aggravated yet determined to find something, "Ah, here it is!" He handed her a first aid kit. She was reluctant to accept though as she kept looking up at him, still holding onto torn papers in her hand.
"But but but...why?!" She was not impressed, or convinced he was actually letting her go. No, something was off here-
"You are worth more to me when you are at your best, not like...that," He motioned at her injuries.
"I could have killed you. I should have. I will probably regret letting you go later, but that's not for here or now." Shrugging, he sat down besides her as he watched her dress her wounds and cuts.
"But your contract-" he held his hand up to cut her off-
"Means nothing to me. What are they going to do, kill me?" He laughed at his own joke, winking at her...her expression remained deadpan however, causing him to focus once more-
"Fine you really want me to kill you: I WILL!"
Without warning, he took out a pistol from his side pocket and aimed it at her chest. She KNEW it was a trap! Such a rookie mistake, as he cocked the gun-
"I will kill you...but not today. I told you, I want you at your best. No injuries, no handicaps, no distractions. I want to hunt and take you down in a manner fitting of an assassin of your caliber." He lowered his rifle and as a show of good faith, put it on the ground out of reach. He then offered her a hand to help her off the ground-
"I'm fine...thanks." Using her hilt as a cane, she lifted herself off the ground- but not before grabbing his gun! "AH HA! Now who is hunting who?"
He just stood there looking at her with a deadpan expression; he made no effort to move, "You will not shoot me. First, I know for a fact you are more of a swordsman, so your aim will be subpar at best. Second, contrary to what you might tell yourself, you do have morals and codes- so you know as well as I do shooting me in this instance is not what you want."
With a defeated sigh, she handed him his gun and first aid kit, "I look forward to our future battle. It will be...interesting."
"It will. Come, I will walk you out of here..." Her fur stood on its end as he gestured her forward, "Just to show I won't shoot you or try get you while your back is turned, geez! I know we are both hired assassins, but I have some honor." Brushing his pants off, he got off the ground and after making sure she was stable enough to walk, led the way forward, "There is a clearance about three miles up this path. I will walk with you, then we can go our separate ways- at least until we meet again."
(To be continued)
What's this- someone that is actually a threat to Whisper? Even top assassins have people that they fear. Whisper just hasn't had the pleasure of meeting many (yet).
Whisper has gotten herself in trouble once more: what do you do when your assassin is as good as you are?
[s]Kill them before they kill you[/] Fight, fight for your life, and hope you're the victor.
Been a while since I got some dynamic, action paced art of Whisper- I actually tend to prefer it over static or pinup pieces.
An absolutely badass piece of art by the wonderful: thepakshi! Let me tell you about this woman: other than being absolutely phenomenal and a joy to work with, she always does a great job drawing my girl- you can tell she put SO much work into this piece and it shows!!! I highly recommend you go watch her if you are not already. Needless to say I will definitely have more art from her in the future~
Thank you so much again!!!
