Original Species: Yeenhog
In the absence of hyenas on the continent of Elysium, a different family of mammals took on the mantle of terrestrial scavengers. Surprisingly, it wasn't the canids that made the step toward filling this niche. Instead, the pigs jumped to the occasion.
The Yeenhog may not be the largest swine on the continent but with its 2,5 ton bulk, it is still quite formidable. As the names may imply, this creature is a pig that convergently evolved in a way that resembles the hyenas of Earth. This foul-tempered beast prowls the grasslands and steppes of Southern Elysium in search of dead or dying animals. The Yeenhog's powerful jaws and stomach acid allow it to make use of most of the carcass.
Similar to its Earth counterpart, this pig is also capable of taking down live prey, in particular favoring young tapirs and, on occasion, other pigs. In terms of social structure, it has a much closer semblance to the brown and striped hyenas, rather than the spotted hyenas. Males and females meet around every 2 years in order to mate and then they go their separate ways with the sow being left alone to raise her litter of 3-5 piglets. The young become self-reliant after about 18 months and then they venture off into the wild to fend for themselves.
