"The Witch and the Dragon" may follow along the story of Leslie and Bolero, but it also features two comedic relief characters who are also equally important to the story overall. One of them is Diego here.
Diego is first seen hanging out with the old witch that trained Leslie. He and Colo-Colo have been hanging by her side for a long time and only recently did they get their chance to go out and have their adventures with Leslie. Sometimes he can be a bit of a dick, giving sass, choosing chaos purely for fun, and being sneaky to get what he wants. Sometimes he bosses Colo-Colo around and bickers with Leslie, but little do they know ... he wasn't always like this..
Some describe the home of the Basilisks as a magical rock that floats high up in the sky, far too high for even birds to reach, and so high up that even the surroundings look completely different than anything you'd normally see on Earth. Here is where all the Basilisks come from, where they emerge from some sparkly crystal goop that gives them their shape-shifting abilities, and the more they bring home to consume, the more the young are able to improve their ability to shape-shift as they grow older. Diego was one such Basilisk who was often excluded and pushed aside as a kid. He had a very innocent boyish charm that made him an easy target for the much larger reptiles, especially from the biggest bully in the neighborhood, but no matter what he always held his chin up and tried to be his best. He even had one single friend that would look out for him; a female that he found rather cute. Over time he tried to stand up for himself and failed, until his cute new friend would come to his rescue, so he knew that he could always count on her. One day he felt bold enough to talk with her and confess his feelings to her, only to be met with the truth that his cute friend was actually the big bully in disguise, who wanted to trick Diego into a false sense of security and have all the others laugh at him when the time came. The pain he felt that day was so strong that he decided he couldn't be around his own kind anymore; he didn't even finish consuming the necessary nutrients for his growth, so his default form was limited to the size of an iguana.
Ever since that day his heart grew cold, his walls went up, and he decided to never trust anyone again, and to only look out for himself. Now he feels little to no sympathy if he tricks someone out of their belongings or sneaks his way into someone's home. Even the chaos he causes couldn't match the pain he felt when he was a kid, so he occasionally will lose himself trying to not feel the pain.
But he is not without a heart, however, because even if he doesn't want to admit it, he cares very much for Colo-Colo which he loves like a brother, and he still cares for Leslie's safety, which he looks after as if she was some lost kid. He even learns to grow closer to Bolero since they seem to get a lot done together, so with this new team dynamic, maybe things will be ok after all.
ENJOY :D
