Here's the wonderfully patient red-tail I used as a model.

I totally cheated in laying out the feathers; I just copied the number of feathers, their positions, angles, shapes, markings... everything from the photo straight to the layout grid. Anytime I had a question I pretty much grabbed the answer straight from the photo... a shameless hawk plagarist! ^v^

The hardest part was scaling the layout grid so that the wrists lined up. My wrist is about 33" from my centerline, so I scaled the grid in photoshop to match. In the bottom photo I laid out the grid with markers for aligning the flight feathers and lining up holes for the thin kevlar string used to link all the primaries in the right positions when they fan out. The Kevlar string snakes through the primary feathers about 12” from the primary pivot, where the feathers are still close enough to hide the string.
