Miroto is probably right with his comment about nothing original being left, there have been countless books written just on the subject of how to handle a plot twist or how to flesh out a story with the various options that you have. Even people accused James Cameron of ripping of Pocahontas with his first Avatar film.

In fact, you could take it one step further, Miroto's suggestion of writing about a gay couple in a society that condemns them is a mirror of real life, there are plenty of countries that still have it as against the law to be in a homosexual relationship, with punishments ranging from jail to even death. It does make for a good novel, since the audience will be constantly rooting for them to somehow find a way to continue their relationship but escape the punishment of a corrupt society.

Always fun how adding new conflict to a story can break writer's block.
