Meet "Suji", my new western bull snake. He's extremely calm and tame compared to Yuki (my hatchling ghost bull) who is fiesty and tries to bite. He loves wrapping himself around my arm.
Suji stands for stripe in japanese. THe reason I chose this name is because of the tiger-stripes he has on his tail (Which you can kind of see on his tail)
And here's the riddle I usually introduce him with..
What looks like a rattle snake, hisses like a rattle snake, rattles its tail like a rattle snake, but isn't a rattlesnake?

Definitely! I just hope my 2010 ghost bull snake hatchling calms down. She's been an utter pain the past few months I've had her..she ate once for me when I got her, then stopped eating for two months and ate again last night. SHe's also extremely aggressive and likes to strike, hiss, and bite. =\
This guy on the other hand...he may be vocal, but he is extremely tame and I think he likes to be handled.

I saw one of these curled up in the middle of the rightmost lane of traffic on a very busy afternoon at 4:30p. I pulled over off the road, ran back to where he was, and he was still alive. I was going to pull him out of the road as soon as the traffic let up ... but some asshole SUV managed to swerve just far enough left that his right tires ran over the poor guy. He wasn't dead, but he was done for. I still fetched him off the road when it was clear, and he was still alive for a few moments. So sad. I brought his corpse to a nice hole near the golfcourse, and covered him with leaves. :( Pretty snake.
Your bull *rattles*? how?

That sucks! Bull snakes are so unique..I now know why one of the breeders I deal with likes them so much! I can't wait until I get more involved with breeding them.
ANd yeah, but he doesn't have a rattle. He just vibrates his tail against the ground and it sounds like he's rattling his tail. xD...my corn, king, and rat snakes do that too.

Indeed! I'll hopefully have some baby snakes this upcoming spring. My ball python currently has eggs in her..and I'll be breeding hopefully two or three corn snakes, a rat snake, and a king snake.
For the corn snakes I'm expecting:
25% Amel het ultra, motley
25% ultramel het amel, motley
50% normal het ultra, amel, motley
(or something like that)
Plus 50% caramel motley het hypo and 50% caramel het hypo and motley
I'll also be making frosted corns (by crossing a gray rat to a corn snake).
I'll hopefully have some florida speckled king snake x californian desert phase king snake babies, and of course my ball pythons.

Hmm, looks like in Colorado, the rules are pretty convoluted. If I read right, I cannot import any reptile species that is native, although I'm allowed to possess up to 6 such snakes. I'm allowed to have any number of unregulated snakes on the following list, but all other snakes are prohibited under general rules:
Bolidae (giant snakes)
Colubridae (modern snakes), except venomous species
Acrochordidae (file and elephant trunk snakes)
Xenopeltidae (sunbeam snakes)
Aniliidae (pipe snakes)
Uropeltidae (shield-tailed snakes)
I've also seen reference to laws that prohibit the possession of any snake longer than 6 feet.

Yeah, it seems that way. It's kind of hard to parse the rules. Bull snakes are supposedly native?, but they don't appear in the native listing in the laws. But nor do they appear in the non-native listing. Perhaps because they get too big, they're banned by the size law. Alas. They seem really cool. What's "colubrid"?
It's a type of snake...a whole bunch fall into it. It's usually used for most non-venomous species from I noticed that aren't a python or boa constrictor. Colubrids consist of corn snakes, king snakes, rat snakes, milk snakes, garter snakes, bull snakes, hognose snakes...and the list goes on.
Some colubrids are actually venomous but are completely harmless to humans even if they do bite you. (Hognose, vine snakes, false water cobra's..)..and these will also be rear-fanged.

you could even ask a breeder who ships across the country too, in case the pet store people don't know. https://www.bhbreptiles.com are very responsible breeders from what i've seen, and they do ship across country in the usa. too bad you can't get a coral snake like i put in your picture ;) you'd have to settle for a milk snake instead XD
rooth commissioned me a while back 8'D i put a coral snake in the background XD
ZOMG cute snakey pics!
you can get an opinion of bhbreptiles from here http://www.youtube.com/user/snakebytestv they put vids up every week and it's rather informative in some vids... silly skits in most :) worth looking at!

I either breed them, buy them from local breeders, or buy frozen mice in bulk via local venders or through http://www.rodentpro.com
