All good questions. I think he chose the harvestman because they are "spiders" but not really spiders. They are unique and misunderstood, like how he is part machine, and unlike other spiders he uses a sort of retractable grapple hook rather than webbing. He was on the streets and has augmented his body to be able to make himself stronger, previously for crime until he has a change of heart when one of his jobs causes the death of his father (the equivalent of Uncle Ben). Then he turns to taking down the people who sent him on the job, and others causing harm.
