(1995) marker ink on paper. Drawn for another one of
Jim Groat's Red Shetland calendars; this time the theme was "Classics of Literature" or something like that.
The fourth story in Gulliver's Travels places him on an island of sentient, civilized horses. Swift's "Houyhnhnms" were supremely rational, idealized beings, to the point of being devoid of animal passions. Sort of like Vulcans, I guess.
Casting Red Shetland as Gulliver, one of my Houyhnhnms began to act like some Yahoo.

AFAIK Gulliver hasn't often been adapted for a dramatic presentation, and even then rarely is the entire tale included. The Country of the Houyhnhnms must be challenging to present in an entertaining fashion. The television version produced some years ago was a very interesting take on the entire work, framing it with Gulliver being tried for insanity as he tells the story. In the end he probably is insane, conversing with ordinary domestic horses as if they understand one other perfectly.
