You know I wasn't expecting to make this post today but hey! Something to talk about.
Was out searching for stones with a friend and I got some Columnar Basalt that I will work on later and I got a tiny rock of Chalcedony, a Silica crystal and I decided to try and make a small Levallois point on it and low and behold, success! A razor sharp, thin triangular flake.
So lets talk Levallois
Levallois technology refers to a middle stone age flake technology in which the core is prepared to knock off a specific shape of flake, controlling the cores form to knock off a desired flake is very difficult! Typically levallois cores are far larger than this as things like levallois points were used for thrusting and throwing spears rather than smaller projectiles like atlatl darts or arrows. But that said the process can be done with about any sized stone provided its done right.
The process relies on setting up a strong platform by taking flakes off of either side of the desired face or forming a stout tortoise shell core, I chose the former. A heavy platform is prepared and then a strong strike is struck. The flake will be trapped by the flake scars of those prior flakes which will shape the flake into, in this case, a triangle.
For drekir, they tend to lean on flake and core technologies and this is one of the most intricate and a probably end point for lithic industries that rely heavily on flake technologies. A smaller projectile like this may be suited for an atlatl point, an arrow point, or a point for some other smaller projectile. Larger levallois points were and would likely also be used as knife blades by drekir depending on how they choose to use the flake.
A material like chalcedony may be used in places where it can be found but is pretty niche. But nonetheless excited to haft this to an arrow! Or atlatl dart, probably an arrow its pretty small
