In appearance, the Irrd are essentially anthropomorphic birds, being bipedal and the height of an average-sized Nuisance. They are very lightly built, and the only race in the Landing in which every member is capable of flight. In fact they can fly incredible distances without stopping to rest or eat or even drink. This is because of their lives in the Frying Pan; an Irrd can live for months on little more than the morning dew from his feathers.
Much like wild birds, the Irrd are coloured according to their gender. Often the plumage patterns are quite similar in both genders, with small differences between males and females. Sometimes each gender is vastly different from the other. However, when it comes to attracting a mate, both genders are equally ambitious, often provoking each other into friendly competitions demonstrating flight skills. Despite their seemingly delicate appearance, the Irrd are incredibly tough. They are not easily injured and when they are, they heal very quickly. They are a warrior race by nature, fighting whether afraid or not, and therefore will not allow even a critical injury to impede their ability to defend themselves and their family. This is vital to their survival, for as long as they’ve existed, they have been a favourite meal of griffins. It is common practice for the Irrd to teach their young how to fight while in flight and many of their elders carry weapons for defense purposes.
Chacii
Full name: Chickikachacii Twiatwi
Gender: Male
Height: 4 ft
Colour: Red, green and blue
Tribe: Macao flock
Chacii is the first contact made by the Landing with the Irrd, the indigenous desert people of the Frying Pan. He is somewhat put off by the rude introduction he received when, after receiving reports of strange tracks and thefts from nomad hunting camps, a scouting party ambushed him and brought him back to Mundalindia in a crate. He has since established firmly that he is not a new kind of wild animal and has warmed up a bit more to Mort and his friends. Chacii is a rather proud young Maccao Irrd and loves nothing more than to fly over the green spaces of the Landing, which are so different from the cliffs that he calls home.
