Summer was here, and Remy was enjoying every minute of it. Kyle told him he could come over anytime.
However, Sunday was Father's Day. And his father had an idea.
That afternoon, Mr. Fox called Remy down into the garage.
Kyle and his father were there waiting for him.
"Okay," said Mr. Fox. "You're probably wondering what's going on. Well, we have a little project for you guys right here.
There was an old red Chevrolet in the garage. Mr. Fox lifted the hood.
"Today, you guys are gonna help us fix up this cars carburetor and change the battery."
Remy knew nothing about fixing cars, so this was a major surprise for him.
Kyle on the other hand, didn't seem as surprised.
Mr. McLontra stepped in. "We both agreed that this would be a big step for you two. So when you're old enough to drive, you'll know the basics."
"It will do you good," said Mr. Fox. "When you're driving out on the highway and your car breaks down, you'll know what to do."
He handed Remy a rachet and brought him over to the engine.
"See these bolts fastening the battery? I want you to loosen them. Turn them to the left. And don't be afraid to get dirty."
Remy did as his father told him. He had to give a good pull to loosen the bolts.
"Remember," said his father,"lefty-loosey, righty-tighty."
Soon Kyle joined in.
'Take that wrench," Mr. McLontra told his son. "And take off that distributor cap."
Kyle did as instructed. When the bolts were out the electric cable were unhooked and the battery removed. The new one was installed and the cables hooked in.
Remy was just getting the hang of this new experience when his father told him they were done. He couldn't believe it. He had just changed a car battery for the first time.
Remy's hands were covered in oily grease, as were Kyle's.
His mother congratulated them on their work and sent them inside to wash up.
"It's really not so bad," said Kyle, "once you know what you're doing."
Remy smiled. "I guess you're right.
He felt a great amount of pride swelling in him. As did his father.
