Zenji was an average young man who worked at a large Japanese aquarium. He was a bit shy, but put forth the best he could manage for his job. He always possessed a love of the ocean, as well as a fondness for the creatures found within. Though he would never admit it outright around others, he also loved anything and everything related to mermaids from an early age. However, experiences when he was a child left him unwilling to share this fact with anybody else.

Zenji was was also a huge fan of the aquarium’s mascot, a selkie mermaid by the name of Maeve, which had been an iconic character of the aquarium for years. Maeve was popular, featuring in a variety of merchandise sold by the aquarium, as well as going so far as to be featured in conservation ads, and even as the star of her own anime at one point.

One day, while dealing with some of the plush toys at the aquarium’s gift shop, Zenji would happen upon one that had turned into a Toonifact. Before he could realize, Zenji found the plush melting into an inky black goo that proceeded to envelop him and change him.

When the changes came to an end, Zenji would discover that he had been turned into an exact copy of Maeve!
