Boy, I haven't hit that "traditional" button for a while...
Anyways, I figured I'd finish a scribble that I did some time ago..added the shading now and added some details here and there
Enjoy

Actually we're very much going for more compact weaponry, our new rifles considered for urban combat by our military are significantly more compact than their predecessors. Take the M16A2 and M4A1 example, though they're both extremely old guns now, the change was a huge improvement for troops and manufacturing costs (taking into account inflation and such)
Money and access not an issue?

Otherwise a nice older bolt-action rifle like my .30-40 krag.
(similar gun here)

I have a custom load for this that is good for farther than my current scope can see. (3/4 mile)
(43g hi-power smokeless with a 135g copper jacketed hollow nose. Muzzle velocity of 3245 ft/s. lightest 30cal round I could find.)
I probably would have found a cheaper, and slightly better platform to build mine from, but this one ed to be my dad's, and my grand-dad's before him.
You could build a excellent sniper/long range hunter/competition rifle for under $300 if you shop carefully, and most of that would be the scope.

Well, you aren't gonna build one of those cheap.
That is over kill for sniping. That is an extreme Big game rifle, used to stop running elephants and rino's.
not to mention the kick and overkill bullet size.
think lighter and faster loads.
*grin* but that is one sweet machine.

You can still have magazine fed bolt action single shot rifles.
And accuracy was never the issue, you can have automatic that are just as accurate as the best bolt action rifle.
The main reason sniper rifles are traditionally bolt action is range and power. you lose no power or range to cycle the action on a bolt rifle. Also, if your rifle action is starting to cycle Before the bullet has even left the barrel, it might be twitching a bit more. so you can miss the shot at long range.
these days, even fully auto capable rifles with fast cycle times can be made to shoot farther than most scopes can see.
so the only real benefit to bolt action is a steadier delivery system for the bullet.
