Mawile wasn't immediately my favorite. It took me a while to shift from my Charizard/Gyarados/Mewtwo favoritism. (I never really got into the second gen, I always favored the first one, and Ruby was the first main series pokemon game since Red that I didn't get secondhand.) And it wasn't until the 4th gen was upon the fandom that I realized that Mawile was my favorite. While climbing Sky Pillar, Mawile would be the only one I wouldn't get mad at for delaying my progress. It's not hard to see why: I was always a fan of the steel type; I usually always had a Steelix in my team. Mawile is (or was) the only pure-steel, non-legendary pokemon (those gear shaped abominations are not pokemon to me!) and because of that, it kind of gradually became my favorite. While I don't regularly battle with one, I do have several dozen across my versions (my Pearl having 17 from around the world). In short, Mawile rules, and that's why it's my favorite.
