The Calebs are slaves actually. The point of the story is to be a commentary on Man-kinds desperate need to decide now what the status will be if we ever really do encounter Hybrids, AIs, ETs, or other such beings. And to say, are we really going to risk that corporations will bring us back to the 1850's, or will we as a society decide that any being has fundamental rights.
