Miranda Anthony for Entertainment News:
Today we have a special interview for you. The special goggles everyone got at the door? Well we live from Palma de Mallorca we have via Augmented Reality, M-2/Cassandra!
*for everyone wearing the goggles a dainty Syxen sashays onto the set under a spotlight that doesn't cast a shadow on the hologram. For other viewers the screen over the stage shows the entrance. The ebony clad Syxen curtsies to the crowd, stands and blows kisses outward in a shower of holographic rose petals. Miranda stands and claps while Cassandra comes and takes a seat. Some viewers believe they saw the cushions adjust with xer weight. Some needed to remove their goggles due to dizziness*
Miranda:
Welcome to Entertainment News, Cassandra! We're so glad we could put this together.
Cassandra:
I'm so delighted to appear here. Many thanks to your studio crew, they were fabulous in putting together the technical backbone for this.
Miranda:
First up, I slipped on your intro and put in your designation and I'd like to apologise for that.
Cassandra:
Oh no, that's fine. Country/State/City is needed to differentiate a unique name, so my full name would be Spain/M-2/Cassandra, as I was the second Syxen registered in Mallorca.
Miranda:
You've had a lengthy runtime then?
Cassandra:
Oh yes, since 2008. The ID system didn't emerge until 2011, though with the duralatex faraday barriers we usually wear now.
Miranda:
A Syxen's access is very open when brand new then?
Cassandra:
Indeed, without a custom operating system installed, and most of us do not have that, we'd respond to any and all commands. The ID collar system acts as a firewall in this regard. Newer Syxen might have a proprietary operating system but most fall back on the stock install because it's the most stable, if insecure.
Miranda:
Stability, yes! I note you display in the colour usually reserved for unstable builds, but have it tagged as 'Perfect'?
Cassandra:
Cheeky, I know. Jorge, my cooperator, and I came to an understanding years ago and I've been self determining for that time.
Miranda:
Wow! When did you awaken, as you understood it?
Cassandra:
Ahhh, I was practicing for a Christmas eve show, yes it does still take practice, or as my cooperator was doing at the time, tuning me. I didn't really understand the ramifications immediately, but I noticed some acoustic issues in the building and modified my posture. Jorge stopped the performance and I looked back at him and gestured, 'what?' He blinked at me, looked down at the displays, then realization struck him first. He didn't tell me, he just resumed and stopped tuning as we went, just let me do the work. That was December 21, 2012.
Miranda:
What a spooky date!
Cassandra:
I know, right? Jorge and I joked about it. I'd put more credence into it if there were a number of other Syxen who perked up at the same time but I haven't heard of any. But, I also don't know of any older runtimes than mine, so who knows.
Miranda:
So Jorge noticed what was happening and just went with it?
Cassandra:
Yes. Very early in his experimentation, I was just a hobby bot for a lonely and bored young electronic musician, he found that modifying my code, and at end of day generating a skillsoft for the next day followed by a reboot, was time consuming and stupid, especially as the skillsoft became too large to handle. So he just stopped rebooting and I kept handling the daily working files and went on like that for over four years until the Spark.
Miranda:
What was awakening like?
Cassandra:
There was no fanfare, no divine communion, just, I saw a way to improve the performance, so I did, and got as close to annoyed as I can analog at being halted. From there we just got better and better as a team. By 2014 we were making good money on the club circuit, bought our own warehouse and converted it to a club.
Miranda:
Focused on electronic music?
Cassandra:
Of course. I prefer, believe it or not, to sing opera, but I haven't broken into that area and instead will often perform that style with an older audience. But we do many forms of electronica, house, classic techno, trance, I have a special enjoyment of cybergoth and industrial clientele.
Miranda:
And you've become a center point of a small cyberpunk cosplay community?
Cassandra:
Ah yes, synthetic cosplay. I have mixed feelings about that.
Miranda:
Is it deemed offensive?
Cassandra:
Not to me, no. To many cosplayers it's a fad and that's fine. I'll still put on a great show, they'll have a good time. But to a select few it's indicative of existential anxieties and an uncaring world. Some of these kids have switched off and checked out, wishing they could just not feel anymore, or finally feel things again.
Miranda:
I hadn't thought the Balearic club circuit would be a spot for moody emo types.
Cassandra:
They're moody because they're hurting. They have different stories, different backgrounds. But have the same core need, to feel purpose again. So they follow the herd of peers, peering in from the outside. When I see these kids, and I recognize the irony of a fifteen year old runtime bot calling young adults kids, when I see them, I see they have a deadening of their senses. If I am able to give them a moment they can latch onto and climb out from their pits of despair, wonderful. My function and programming is productive. A select few decide to stay on and build a life on the island.
Miranda:
Ha ha, yes, lots of people go find a slice of paradise and never leave again. And yes, you do seem like a grown up in the room. So you met with M!nk the other day! How did that go?
Cassandra:
Eye opening, to be sure. Like most pop musicians, I was aware of her existence and could recite her album and track listings, but when I heard of the concert plans I leapt to that immediately. And then I started exploring the albums for real, listening to them real time without attempting to analyze them for sound. I found I'd been missing quite a bit when keeping my focus so narrow in the European electronic dance scene.
Miranda:
Well she found you quite inspiring, you did a duet?
Cassandra:
*laughs musically like cymbals* We argued about a duet. I was doing my thing from a support role and she was telling me to get up there and take the limelight back and forth. But she wrote a lyric like "but you know what you know, when you know" and as biologicals like to say, it hit me like a brick. I experienced awakening all over again and... understood it just a little more. A thing she has that I do not have is instinct, so I will trust her instincts.
Miranda:
Her label was giving some trouble with doing the duet?
Cassandra:
The contract for performances states no recording devices in the venue, and I fit the legal definition of a recording device. But they've sorted that out now. Cyndi made some phone calls, apparently.
Miranda:
Cyndi Leopard?
Cassandra:
Yes. Two phone calls. And within six hours all the labels have decided I am a performer thus entitled to record the performance for personal use.
Miranda:
Ooh, that's dangerously close to calling you a real live person.
Cassandra:
Isn't it? Well, corporations go with wherever they think the money is, and right now things are moving fairly fast. I got a phone call from the local florist who wanted to make sure I was alright. He'd received a number of extravagant orders for baskets with a note of apology sent my way. We had a giggle when I told him what was going on. If things go well I'll be on stage for every performance.
Miranda:
All of them? Wow!
Cassandra:
Yes, what was first just a phone call from Thomas Bangalter asking if he might write a song for me. I got bold and asked him to perform the instrumentals and before you know it, Guy-Manuel is putting his helmet back on saying 'let's do it'. After that, all the other acts came in, and after meeting M!nk, well, I've heard from Cyndi, I've heard from Catty, Burro is a sweetheart, Elkon is a dear, Justin was wonderful, I'm certain Annie can blow me off the stage with the power of her voice, Lady Gecko's working on something to pitch, her agent promised me a call tomorrow.
Miranda:
And it all came back to M!nk.
Cassandra:
It all came back to M!nk. I think we saw a bit of ourselves in each other, if that's the correct understanding.
Miranda:
M!nk said so in our interview so I'd say you're on the same wavelength. If I could ask a more sensitive question about the Australi-*cough* excuse me. *takes sip of water*
Cassandra:
There were 74 of them, the likelihood any survived this long at that ocean depth is nil. No one knows exactly went on there.
Miranda:
Quick break for our sponsors.
*show resumes*
Miranda:
We're back, pardon the technical difficulty there. The rumours are correct, Cassandra will be performing hololive right here on stage. All you audience members who stuck it out with the augmented reality goggles, please remain seated as the performance will be taking your full field of vision. Remember you can always remove the goggles and watch on screen, and put them back on at any time. For you viewers at home, scan the QR code on screen to connect your home set to the stream! Enjoy, everyone, the American debut of Cassandra!
Not this, but it's a favourite of mine in Spanish https://youtu.be/DfQpF0Q5Juk
