Do not get me wrong, the traditional resume format is the most recognizable example you would see in a stack of applications. The recruiter/HR rep/hiring manager are used to seeing them and, in some cases, are expecting that format.
I have worked with so many clients who's work history took many turns, so the the traditional format does not work well. Do not feel like you must stay within tradition! There are plenty of other formats/approaches that exist out there. Search on the internet for resume templates or, even, real resumes. Take note of what formatting you like, and incorporate it into your current structure.
Remember, the goal of the resume is being able to communicate that you have the necessary knowledge and skills needed to perform the job in about 10 seconds. If doing so means breaking with convention, then break convention!
