THIS IS PART OF A 20 MIN WRITING CHALLENGE
Set a timer for 20 minutes, and write anything and everything until that timer is up. No breaks, no edits, and post whatever you've finished.
This is mainly a self-improvement and a building block for me as I've been out of it for a long while.
More short stories from me as I haven't been in the greatest spot to think of long-form stories. Although, I do have plenty of ideas for longer writing, I have three stories in progress. One of them being "Sophie has a date", another as a Backstory deal, and one purely for lore building for the character that I've written today!
CONTAINS: ... Nothing. Just Vickie and her thoughts. Memories of past trauma and current job stress adding onto that? Basically the jist of it.
Out of most of my stories, this one is the most serious. Please, enjoy!
Winter has fallen upon the city once again. A blanket of white filling the streets, sidewalks, plants, and streetlights. The tall elephant walked those snow-laden streets, wrapped in a thick coat that protected her from the harsh winter that the city brought. Vickie was recuperating from a rather hard moment in her job and she wasn’t going to know the outcome of her most recent patient. They’d been in and out of the ambulance a lot during the last couple of weeks, and especially one car accident that caused her to pick them up and run to the hospital wasn’t on her list of things that year.
Now she can finally look at the night sky, white dots hovering down to the ground, illuminated by the city lights. They almost looked like stars. Only something pretty like snow could be referred to as stars. Vickie was thinking pretty sentimentally, solemn thoughts filling her mind as she had a sneaking feeling that as this year was coming to an end, something horrific is going to happen in her life. Holidays are typically the worst for a lot of folks, and she’s usually the gal her job calls to make sure they’re okay or to pick up the pieces of a now-demolished and traumatic holiday season for a devastated family. Rough times are going to happen. Maybe it was time Vickie found a different job that wasn’t dealing with traumatic events every time she was on call.
As if she teleported, she was already back at the Black Cloud Corp. headquarters. Inside she went, nobody there other than the receptionist greeting her. The elephant gave a wave to the hyena in response. The wide and tall elephant went towards the elevators, heading up and going to her home.
Vickie dropped her winter coat, leaving her purse with it. The elephant looked at her couch and sighed, ready to crash for the night. She looked at a clock hanging above her door.
04:38 a.m.
Her friends will be waking up soon, or at least she’ll start hearing several thunderous noises within the next couple of hours. The elephant looked and stared at the ceiling. The thoughts of her past started flooding in, how it was peaceful and well together. Lots of brothers and sisters, all taking up spots in several parts of the world. Her mother and father are the hardest working, and she didn’t even need to mention it knowing that she was the problem child when she came into this world.
She stopped thinking about that, then looked towards her bookshelf. Though filled with books, there were a lot of snow globes decorated beside the books. They were her fathers. Once she moved to the city, he made and shipped them to her. At least every room had at least one snow globe, some having at least 4 or 5. It all changed when he started having problems. The most cherished one she kept was on her table in the living room. She shifted her mind to that.
It was a mini-model of her home. Her mom, her dad, and her younger self. They were all happy.
