Original Species: North-Elysian Pigmy Tapir
The North-Elysian Pigmy Tapir is a close relative to the much larger Wooly Tapir. This roughly sheep-sized mammal inhabits islands off the north-western coast of the continent and is an example of a phenomenon known as "island dwarfism". Due to the limited area and resources on the islands, the tapirs that ended up there a few thousand years earlier had to adapt and thusly they shrunk. Thanks to this strategy, they are better adapted to exploit the environment they live in without causing unnecessary destruction.
North-Elysian Pigmy Tapirs share their island home with other miniaturized creatures, such as the Shrub Griffin (which in turn is the smaller relative of the Great Northern Griffin).
