Decided to share with yall the subspecies of lizardfolk I've been working on for my Pathfinder 2e campaign, the "khimerians" :)
Khimerians, a remarkable subspecies of lizardfolk that inhabits the uncharted lands of the Lost Continent, exhibit an awe-inspiring diversity in their physical characteristics. Their scale coloration spans a spectrum from earthy browns to vivid blues, with shades of green being the most prevalent and iconic among their kind. However, it is their extravagant crests that truly catch the eye, always displaying the most vibrant colors, from deep reds to bright cyans, often contrasting against the more timid shades of their body colors.
These curious reptilians also possess an inherent adaptability that manifests in their physical forms. The variations in their builds, observed among the Khimerians, are influenced by multiple factors such as the season of their egg's laying, the availability of sustenance, and the presence of threats in their surroundings. During the late spring and summer months, the hatchlings known as "High-sails" emerge, quickly growing up and developing tall and robust physiques. These powerful individuals are a testament to the bountiful resources, but also a response to possible threats.
In contrast, the "Swift-foot" Khimerians come into existence throughout the year, displaying a smaller and more agile stature. Their lithe forms facilitate rapid movements and require far less sustenance, allowing them to navigate treacherous terrains with exceptional grace and precision, as well as endure adversities more easily through exceptionally dry or cold months.
In extraordinary circumstances, the Khimerians experience metamorphoses that further showcase their exceptional nature. When faced with heightened threats from the wilderness or rival clans, some Swift-foot Khimerians may undergo a transformative process, transitioning into the powerful and imposing High-sails. This adaptation grants them increased strength and resilience, enabling them to confront the dangers that threaten their kin.
Conversely, during times of scarcity and famine, High-sails may undergo a much rarer metamorphosis, reverting to the Swift-foot variation, assuring that their clan is able to survive during times of scarcity of food or prolonged migration periods.
