Been flintknapping a lot over the past few months, trying to improve my ability and finally I have some various projectile points to show for it.
All relatively crude, not perfect but they are all sharp, all pointy! All will work which is kinda the point. A projectile point need not be the most beautiful symmetrical straight biface to do the job. Those will probably do the job! But we have tons and tons of examples of far cruder points like these made and in the DragonScape, the same rules apply!
Generally the dragons scattered across the planar of the DragonScape don't come from any sort of lithic industry, be they the sivilão scattered from Jãrsta who mostly engaged in Stãllurgy in their tool traditions, or the american drekir who would awaken 100 years later who are uh, modern people! So as these groups went about surviving they would probably experiment with or rediscover the potential of knapped lithics to produce blades and tools. But with the majority lacking experience and flintknapping tools, things will start off very crude and probably continue to be pretty utilitarian for hundreds of years after the awakening. With the fancier and finer knapped objects being more for show than use. These folks aren't making clovis points.
As these societies settle and other tool materials start being used like Copper, Ground Stone, Bronze, Bone, Chitin, etc. Lithics tend to continue to see use as its relatively quickly to make a pointed and sharp tools with them. Be they simple flake tools that are either used as is or lightly modified (May make an experimental drekeology later for that), or in the form of bifaced tools which is what I have been exploring more recently (And have more things to show... in time.)
I say often that the majority of drekir societies are very "chalcolithic" in nature, and while copper is common in one form or another, so are the lithics! And here are some of those.
I am no master flintknapper but one doesn't have to be to make functional points!
So here are some of those simple points! Left to right
A tiny chert projectile pressureflakes on a small flake, would be for a smaller projectile in general, such as an arrow, slingshot dart, But nothing to say they couldn't be hafted on an atlatl dart, particularly when complimented with other small lithic barbs to aid it.
A less tiny chert projectile thats a bit thicker, with a bit more blade pressure flakes from another flake from the same rock. It has a small concave base to aid in the hafting process and again, is probably more for a slingshot dart or arrow.
The one im most proud of, an obsidian stemmed arrow, about 3 inches long, that could probably work well on any sort of projectile as a heavier point. Pretty excited about that one!
An older chert point I had attempted to make and failed (as you can see by the scars in it) but I went ahead today and worked on it some more, giving it a solid edge and a stem for hafting.
points like these may find their way into the hunting points of many drekir societies.
So yeah sharp rocks!
