He's been injured a few times, like any pro athlete. But the injury he's talking about in this picture is a serious one when a black panther player ripped his side open on the court, sending him to the emergency room.

RISE UP!
Young man, you're not dead yet!
You're still alive if you still bleed red
FIGHT BACK!
The biggest game's just begun
When you return, the battle's won
You will stagger, you will stumble, and you will fall young man
But a player burns brightest when he stands up again
(Excerpt from Rise Up (Burn bright) From the album To Buck)
The album To Buck was a surprise to anyone who heard it. The artist who recorded it was none other than the venerable goof Bryn Mastiffson, whomost notorious for leading the irrepressable peanut gallery at Rabble games. The album was a gift to Buck Hopper, given to him by Bryn Mastiffson while Buck was recovering from the near-fatal attack. The double-disc album had soothing, relaxing tunes on one disc--intended to help Buck relax while he recovered--, and ferocious, powerful, and challenging songs on the other, to encourage Buck to return to the court (Rise Up (Burn bright) was obviously on the latter disc).
There has been some question if the album will ever be released in stores, but that is currently unlikely: the liner notes in the album transferred all rights to Buck Hopper (save for some traditional klezmer tunes on the album that are in the public domain), and Buck also holds the only copy. While Bryn Mastiffson has the masters, the Mastiffson Brass would need Buck's permission to release any of the songs (save for the aformentioned public domain songs).
Bryn himself has joked that if Buck ever wants to try a rap career, which many basketball players seem to try, he has plenty to sample from.

Does it show?
Yes, this unwelcome houseguest has tempted me, engraged me, and been my constant, greatest challenge for too many years.
I deal with him one attack at a time. I know his tricks and he knows mine, so the wins and losses are high on both sides.
All I can advise, punk, is this: if you weren't meant for greatness, this vile little bitch would've never bothered you in the first place...
To proceed, one of my fav personal "buoying" songs. Prick up those big ears, punk, and attend well:
