Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain, is set to open the world’s first intensive octopus farm - currently, there is no legislation in Spain that protects octopus welfare, meaning hundreds of thousands of these hyperintelligent beings are at risk. They would be reared in cramped tanks every year before being slaughtered for food, enduring intense and prolonged suffering. Furthermore, octopuses are carnivores and solitary animals, meaning there is no way to call occtopus farming sustainable without it being greenwashing and humanewashing. As an ecological and moral disaster waiting to happen, I urge you to sign the The Save Movement petition to boycott the Canary Islands until they agree to stop octopus farming. Next, sign the Change.org petition asking for a European law banning the breeding of octopuses in farms.
