Varo “Forester” Drizdal (Level 8 Ranger - Version 2)
This is an updated take on one of my One-Shots into a full fledged campaign hero. This version of Varo is a Horizon Walker with a backstory of a Gate Warden. He’s considered to be the “Scanlan” of the group, the jokester / goofball who tends to get himself into more trouble than most people would find comfortable. But inside is a brave soul who doesn’t fear much, who loves life & fairness & doesn’t care for money as he does a good story / emotional value of what’s around him. His powers as a Gate Warden & spells comes from summoning spiritual guardians that take the form of various animals that he names. He even renames magic items that he collects as well, such as his purple necklace of a Beholder’s Eye into “Owl’s Eye” as an example.
Story:
Once a Blackmoor Ranger within the Fading City of Shinaelestra in the Feywild, Varo has quite a lot of pressures to succeed as a scout / guard for all the major planar portals cropping up over the past 10 years. Not to mention his family legacy as Blackmoor Rangers. He even found his true love of another Harengon, Yllana & raised a family of 6 kids. Life was swell as the Blackmoor offered housing to be in while the rangers were training. But one night, all of it changed. Varo’s squad was sent in to investigate a mysterious monster roaming the land & is ordered to kill it. But they soon found that it was a doomed mission, with everyone in the squad dying to the beast except for Varo & another fellow scout. In a fit of rage / fear, Varo shot his arrow toward the monster, only to strike his own squadmate down instead. Now with blood on his paws, he flees to leave behind whatever pride he had left for the Rangers & for his own safety. He gave a quick goodbye to his own family, hoping that the rangers would never find his tracks & presumed KIA so his family would not be caught in the crossfire of his misdeeds. Leaving his family behind under a hidden identity, The Forester, he wandered through plane after plane, meeting an Tortle friend by the name of Raph; who helped him to guide towards Nobanion, Lord Firemane, as a way to help train his skills further to hone back his insecurities. Once his training was complete, Nobanion whisked him away to the city of Marthy, back to the Material Plane as a final set of trials he must face. It was here his story continued; from befriending / pissing off a gargoyle casino owner, killing multiple demons, extraplanar creatures & even undead galore & having multiple visions of a potential villain working forces beyond their comprehension to make a potential new SpellPlague to ravage the world as they know it. But with new friends, spirits & the world brimming with exploration; he’s got his antlered tipped head held high as he gets back up time & time again.
