Been a while since I've posted projects here on FA! There are a few to catch up on But I wanted to pick the most important one.
I have been practicing flintknapping for a while and while that has mostly been blade cores, I have been slowly figuring out how to make bifaces for the DragonScape and here I have an obsidian Handaxe to present to you! Or an acheulean Handaxe
Kinda confusing as they weren't generally used as woodcutting implements. Lets actually discuss that
A handaxe in this case is a simple biface (Stone worked on both faces). they come in a variety of shapes, this one being pointed, and rather than being hafted in a handle, are held in the hand. A handaxe like this would be used to cut meat and plant material, its a butchering blade! which I have tested it on raw beef, cuts it well!
Of course this handaxe will never be as sharp as the flakes that I took off to make it, but the advantage here is that this blade is both more durable and more easily resharpened than any of the far sharper flakes that you could knock off the same piece of obsidian.
tools like these in our history are mostly associated with the Aechulean lithic industry that existed between 1.5 million to 300,000 years ago, in the lower paleolithic. These bad boys were being made before homo sapiens were even a thing! Just our ancestral species such as Homo Erectus and the species similar to it. There are quite literally millions of these handaxes across the world and they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles! They are what defines the Lower Old Stone Age.
But back on topic, post apocalyptic dragon raptors some of whom are also us its complicated
Dragons in the wake of the Pulse/Jãrsta, Quite literally billions of dragons would be stranded across the planar. First the billions of abandoned sivilão remnants, many of which would not have a prejag to work under to rebuild the sivilão anew, left to fend for themselves. Then the 1.2 billion Americans caught up in the Pulse and that consequent awakening 100 years after the pulse.
And all of these dragons are mostly left to fend for themselves and one of the industries that develops across many planar are knapped lithics! Be it natural cherts, obsidians, jaspers, etcs. Scavenged glass from old prepulse ruins in the Americas, or even mana based lithics like locally fabricated manacherts. Most of this knapping is not intricate, being basic core flake technologies at the beginning as dragons just are trying to get any sharp edge to get a tool to help them make it day to day.
But over time what starts off as basic flake and core production in many cases develops into more complex knapping industries such as prepared cores (blade, levallois, conchoidal, etc.) And sometimes into the development and reinvention of bifaces such as this one. These are usually simple, Handaxes, Handblades, Choppers, and other such tools that are often too thick for hafting, but nonetheless offer a sturdy and sharp edge for various tasks. Along with this you often see drekir make more precise flakes and modify those flakes to serve a variety of other functions. But thats for a different day.
I would imagine handaxes such as these, as well as choppers to appear in many societies. Be they drekir or ormer (with there far larger variants). Some may be huge, others may be small, and they might be used for a variety of tasks. From butchering and food processing to sawing wood and bone. A simple biface to serve many functions.
As for this one, it was hard to make and I am happy with it! Not a beautiful biface but this one is mine! I shall name him John, john is a good name.
