"Miss Dolly?" called a voice outside the meeting room as we departed the office. A young man in navy uniform approached.
"Lieutenant Cloutier?" I replied, "I'm to see you at some point for mobility suit skills assessment."
The Lieutenant stepped up, "Please excuse the interruption. Something's come up and, are you available for a working assessment immediately?"
Alarmed, Jean-Tama put a hand protectively around my shoulder, Gisèle indicated that if I couldn't she'd step right up. I gave her a contactless poke in the ribs and asked what the new crisis was.
"Hopefully nothing," the lieutenant replied. "Up in the mountains across the island there are pod stations with a Syxen in each monitoring for fire and for reports of missing hikers in order to go looking. We had a call from one of the SAR tech operators that occasionally check on the Syxen that her partner had disappeared. She did a cursory search and then came back down the mountain back into cellular range to call for help."
"No helicopter access?" I asked.
"Not in that location, it's a steep valley prone to winds and flooding."
I looked up at Jean-Tama who replied, "Go, go. This permit is important to you. Gisèle, Holly, and I will keep Polly on a leash."
"Hey!"
With a studiously straight face, Lieutenant Cloutier said our equipment was being brought up to the roof right now, and we would launch from the helicopter pad. I slipped out of my dress and gave it to Polly as a distraction to keep her occupied and took her swimsuit for the task and hurried up to the roof with the Lieutenant.
"I fly an EGP-09, not as nice as your rig but it's what we get in the Navy," he said with a grin.
"Hey, by kilogram those are quite nice for the price, good glide range too if you lose power. A Ghost falls like a rock."
"You know your power suits!" He opened the door to the roof where several enlisted men were setting down a loader with my suit in parts on it, and a crate containing Cloutier's EX-Gear.
As we suited up he went over weather conditions, our target location and preferred flight path out of city limits.
God damn it was nice to be back in the saddle with competent teammates. I wonder what wild new stuff my counterpart's been flying lately.
