Creatures for AWANTARA
These are some "concept" (lol) sketches for an RP universe called AWANTARA, which is a sort of embryonic universe of floating islands that hasn't set up its own nature yet, but for a mysterious obelisk in its center and people from different universes inadvertently finding themselves in this world. I've been on a break from it, but hope to get back in over my semester break.
(1) Some kind of island. With a Menger sponge on it. And obelisks. I dunno. Nobody knows. How the heck would you even GO THERE? WHAT KIND OF CRAZY WORLD IS THIS???
(2) Rushmooms grow almost anywhere. Large ones have their spore-gills encasing the whole cap. Spotted ones are edible, brown ones are NOT.
(3) Sentinels float miles above the ground, silent structures that hover around the Monolith. They are rare sights, coming to the tower in small groups at certain times of the year. It's hard to judge their size, since they are so high up. Their role in AWANTARA seems important, but yet unknown.
(4) Sfiras roll around in hard shells. Rarely, they open up, revealing a shy, dark, soft creature inside. When threatened (really threatened) they close up tight, and leak an awful fluid. They can smell both fear and jealousy.
(5) Oorous wander the forests at night, scraping against trees, eating sap and discussing the current issues affecting their communities. Pretty harmless... except during breeding season: the female ones turn bigger, and have a taste for meat then. The males turn totally white, and pretty much die after a wild night with the ladies.
(6) Barin-gurdhas are often found in high-altitude regions. Incredibly intelligent, possessing strange powers. They latch on to their hosts like a ring around their limbs. (The bird-thing? Oh, that's a one-horned Pukurr. They're quite stupid.)
(7) Most people will mistake the Moebious for a lawn ornament. It's actually a colony of small creatures that feed on decayed organic matter. The thing is actually quite fragrant (smells like cookies) and flavourful (if you don't mind destroying a miniature society of innocent creatures).
(8) Chafe Snakes are found in the desert area, hunting for small prey by moving through the sands as if they were water. Their hides are thick and smooth, and their teeth make great sandpaper (whodathunkit?). Watch out for the larger ones, though.
(9) Trivalves are mostly found in the Pink Sea. They remain sealed tightly when the tide is low, but unfurl during high tide to filter-feed. Usually they are the size of fists, but gigantic varieties seem to exist. It is rumored that these larger trivalves contain beautiful stones with mysterious properties inside them. The tight seal of the shells could be useful for constructing submersibles, also.
