Decided to write a short story this time around! Although I still am working on Ignition for those curious, I just predict that Chapter 2 will be significantly longer than Chapter 1. This story is just meant for some entertainment and to that end I hope it ends up being an enjoyable read for you!
In ancient times there was a prophecy, one that told of a mighty red dragon laying waste to our entire kingdom if he was not bested by a champion. This champion was to be special in many ways, stronger than twenty men, fast as the wind, and with determination like none other before. Many doubted the prophecy as it was supposedly some silly tale written up by their ancestors however seeing is believing because one day the sky was blanketed by the visage of a mighty red dragon a creature only spoken of in legend, the creature need not even try to inspire fear into the hearts of the common folk.
If the Prophecy was to be believed then all hope was lost until a champion could be found. There were many warriors who claimed to be that champion but when they confronted the dragon they were all bested and left with their metaphorical or sometimes very literal tail between their legs. Hope had seemed lost until a boy with an Anvil shaped birthmark was found, the Anvil was recognized as a symbol of the Gods and surely this boy would be the champion that they sought. From that point forward the boy was trained rigorously in both mind and body and he began to outshine all of his other fellows in record time. There was no doubt that this was the prophesied champion now. That champion's name was Urolk, Urolk was a kind and gentle soul who swore to protect those who were precious to him.
One day Urolk did something ill-advised and despite his mentor's warnings he decided that he could fight the dragon now. Urolk many worried that they may lose their champion and would be doomed to be eradicated by the dragon. Much to their relief Urolk returned but he did not seem to have been beaten down or burned like all those before him, nor did he seem to be particularly victorious but something had changed within the Husky warrior. When folks asked him what happened he would be lost in thought for a moment before quickly responding that he never found the dragon.
Urolk began to study the arcane arts from that day forward even though he was more of a martial warrior, he claimed that he would need every tool necessary to slay the dragon. He learned all manner of magical spells and abilities and was on track to become a master wizard. Much to the shock and dismay of the people of the kingdom Urolk would often go out to find the dragon multiple times, fortunately each time he came back unharmed, empty handed, but oddly enough a bit happier to have taken the journey in the first place it seemed. He would say that the walks were a time where he would clear his mind.
Where we are now, the story is soon to reach its climax, the elders believe that Urolk may be ready and because Urolk has had trouble even finding the beast he was to be given a guide to find the dragon. A young woman by the name of Ellie who was a fox scout, she’d been recently assigned to the task of locating the dragon after Urolk had failed so many times before. We come now to the duo preparing to head out to finish this story. Urolk was adjusting his staff which doubled as an arcane focus and a good weapon when Ellie entered the room, Ellie looked at Urolk who hadn’t even a scar from the countless battles he’s been in which could only be attributed to his supreme mastery of every violent art known to man. She cleared her throat and spoke…“Well the dragon is still in its lair, we should still be ready to go…by the way uhhh…I’ve been wondering..how are you going to kill it anyways?”
Urolk looked up from his sitting position and smiled “Well with a mixture of my martial prowess and i'm going to finish the dragon with by unloading my magic into him” The warrior was very proud of his plan but took a moment to pause and think about what he just said, he blushed for a moment before shaking his head and asking if they should leave now, Ellie nodded and the two headed off into the woods. When they were far enough into the woods Ellie out of curiosity asked to see just what kind of spells the warrior would be using on the dragon, Urolk obliged by pointing his staff at a distant tree and with a few simple incantations created a massive explosion that spread fire to the tree! Ellie was very impressed until she looked long enough to see that something was off.
“Hey Urolk, that fire doesn’t look all that…natural…is this part of your magic? To make sure the woods don’t catch fire?” “No, no, it's an illusion spell” “What?” With the snap of his fingers the fire dissipated and the tree was in perfect condition once more. Ellie asked how it would be useful and he told her that a well placed distraction will leave any enemy vulnerable. The real spell won’t be nearly as flashy, potent spells are never flashy but the illusory ones always are to keep you on your toes. Ellie could see that Urolk really was going to try to pull out every stop…and who knows maybe he’d succeed…well he’d have to for the kingdom's sake.
Ellie somewhat shyly also asked Urolk if there was anyone he was interested in. Secretly hoping that maybe he’d taken an interest in her. Unfortunately that was shot out of the water almost immediately as Urolk stated that while it's not the norm there is a guy he’s into who he has been seeing a lot, although he had to stop seeing them recently because seeing them became a bit more complicated. This guy is just funny, charismatic, a gentle soul who couldn’t even kill a fly although he’s been picked on by a lot of people and just wants to be left alone but Urolk seemed confident that he could help his lover with that.
They were a day away from the dragon's lair, this would be the final nights rest they’d have before Urolk has to contend with the dragon and perhaps due to the finality of this moment Urolk confesses something to Ellie. “Something I’ve been wondering ever since they called me a champion is why me? Why did the Gods brand me with this anvil, what makes me so special anyways, all of my talents and gifts can be attributed to the Gods so they could’ve given them to anyone but they gave it to me instead. It always seemed a bit unfair that things have to go the way the prophecy goes, and why does the prophecy even make the dragon burn down our homes anyways?” Ellie didn’t really expect Urolk to say this kinda thing right before bed but it was a worthwhile inquiry, after all Urolk has had no real choices at all, he was forced to train, forced to bear everyone's hopes and forced to face the dragon.
Ellie paused for a moment and just said “I get how you feel, it is pretty unfair but the prophecy is a warning and if we don’t rely on you we will all perish without fail. We wouldn’t have wished it to be this way if we could help it but this is just the way it is.” “I understand that, I do, but do you think I or even the dragon chose this? I mean maybe the prophecy is just all wrong, maybe it's just one big bad assumption y’know, I mean it's been years since the dragon was spotted and not a single person has died, a beating is the worst thing that's happened. I just think it's one big bad assumption.” Ellie would go on to say that it's better to assume the worst then to be hopeful in a situation like this and the two go to sleep. The next day the two make it to the dragon's lair and before they fully enter it, they say one last prayer before going in. When they happened upon the red dragon it seemed to have been resting but was roused by the rather loud footsteps of Urolk, stealth at this moment seemed to be one of the qualities Urolk lacked. The dragon looked at the two with its fearsome gaze and bellowed loud enough for all to hear. “You know not who you challenge, warrior, all others of your kind have fallen before me, make no mistake, you shall not be different, you shall taste no victory.” Urolk spat on the ground and just said `They weren’t me '' with those fighting words the two clashed with each other, the fight was happening very quickly and Ellie knew to not get in Urolk’s way, she’d just slow him down.
The fight was a spectacle, almost like a dance as if both fighters were performing with each other in an almost majestic way. The fight seemed to be going well for Urolk which was seemingly beyond the dragon's belief and with the flourish of the champions staff an eye blinding brightness filled the lair accompanied by the loud screech of the dragon followed by a resounding thud as the dragon's body hit the ground. When Ellie could see again, the dragon had ironically enough been burnt to a crisp and had blood pouring out of his mouth. Ellie looked shocked “You, you did it…that spell was incredible!! We have to go back and tell everyone” Ellie beckoned for the warrior to follow but he did not “Go on without me, that last spell took a lot out of me…I need a moment.” Ellie understood and went on ahead, in her excitement a sudden thought came to mind “Wait a minute, somethings off ... .I feel like I’m forgetting something ... .well it's probably nothing reporting the dragon's death is more important!”
Once Ellie was long gone, Urolk went over to the dragon's body and kneeled down “It's okay Vult, I think she bought it, we can rest easy now” The dragon opened its eyes and looked into Urolks “So the kingdom will think I’m dead? It's over?” Urolk smiled and nodded, the dragon smiled back and the two embraced each other…after all the prophecy did only state that the Champion had to best the dragon…never said how.
